-
Hi Susan  Nothing on these familes

 The Cemeteries I listed Abbotshall,Bennochy & Pathhead
Are older Cemeteries and burials there are most likely to be for
Persons who have have ground their, passed down from their ancestors.

Dysart Cemetery is still being used at present for new burials

In the 40s a new cemetery was opened in Kirkcaldy called Hayfield
Cemetery That is most likely where they would have been buried
Or they could have been cremated at Kirkcaldy Crematorium
 Which opened in 1959
 ·   The current lair registers (dating from 1939) are administered by Fife Council, Kirkcaldy Crematorium, Dunnikier Park, Dunnikier Way, Kirkcaldy, KY1 3PL. Tel. 01592 260277. Fax 01592 203438.

				Hi Norrie,

Thank you for checking, I just know that they were buried somewhere in Kirkaldy, and the year for Agnes was about 1909, not sure about Andrew. The did live in Kirkaldy, but it is just family chat that they have a stone, so it might not be.

 Thanks again

I'm descended from Patrick Blyth and Isobel Inglis, who were married in 1709 at Abbotshall, Kirkcaldy. Their son Patrick Blyth (b.1711) married Margaret Watson in 1744 at Dysart/Abbotshall.

Patrick and Margaret had a daughter called Isobel Blyth (b.1748, Abbotshall) who married William Anderson at Dysart/Abbotshall in 1770.

William Anderson and Isobel Blyth were my 4 x great-grandparents. They would eventually move to Pittenweem in east Fife where they were the ancestors of the fishing families of Anderson and Horsburgh.

One scary aspect of having Blyth ancestors in Kirkcaldy is that you may be related to the former Tory Defence Secretary and current TV presenter Michael Portillo, whose maternal grandfather was a John Blyth of Dysart.

				Hello Norrie,

Brilliant!  Thank you so much for that.  John Blyth and Margaret Simpson Christie (Dys 291) were my paternal grandparents so it's great to see their stone.  Pity it's a bit weather beaten but I'm really pleased that it's still there.  The others you sent have given me several leads to follow up which is good.

With regard to the other Blyths in Dysart, Dys 788 James McFarlane Blyth and Laura Blyth and Dys 272 James S Smith and Annie Blyth, are, I'm sure, mine too.

Dys 443 William Blyth and Dys 1288 William Blyth may be mine because I've got a couple of Williams for whom I do not yet have spouses.  I'll check them out with SP when I renew my credits.

So, thank you once again.  You've made an old man very happy.

A Good New Year to you Norrie!

Many thanks for your last posting.  I wonder if you could look up another one for me.  It is for my Uncle Bert and Auntie Jeannie, more specifically:

Robert Herdman (1905-1968) & Jane Booth Blyth (1901-1986).

They lived for a while in Lady Helen Street, just behind Abbotshall Kirk, but could be buried anywhere.  He was manager of Raith Rovers from 1945 to 1962 and I have fond memories of him.

 Kind regards,

 Jack

				Hello Norrie,

I've been unable to find any birth or baptism for Bert Herdman.  There are some thoughts within the family that he may have been born in Stoke on Trent.  I've searched the GRO indexes but have found no trace up to now.

 Good luck at Hayfield.

Hello Norrie G, and thank you, your offer is very generous!

I see by your surname interests that you have Kinnears listed.  I'd be particularly interested to find out whether my gt grandfather, Alexander Kinnear, b. Innerleven 1872 (son of Alexander Kinnear & Isabella Rodger), died 23/11/1908, coalminer, might be buried in any of the relevant cemeteries?

If there are Kinnears anywhere, in fact, I'd be curious to see whether they may be connected; there are other related names, too, but I'll concentrate on these, first.

 Cheers
 Deb

My great grandparents lived in High Street, Kirkcaldy and died as follows:

 William Spence died 18/8/1922
Annie Spence (nee Cowan) died 12/12/1918

Have no idea whether they'd have had a headstone or not but think it's possible. Have you any details of them please?

Thanks for that and for the photocopy of the press report.  The middle name "Rodger" was a surprise so there's another line of investigation.

 Kind regards,

				Hi

I am looking for the tomb of John RUSSELL, Spirit Dealer.  I believe he had a family tomb in Abboshall Cemetery.  His wife, Mary ORR or RUSSELL died in 1852.  John RUSSELL predeceased her.  Do you have this in your records?

 Thanks

Thanks a lot Norrie - this is the one.  I'm very grateful indeed.  The others you list I don't seem to know of - the only other grave which might be there is John Russell's parents - William Russell (d before 1828) and his wife Isabel Greig (interred at Abbotshall on 12 Feb 1835) who I think may be referred to as mother of John Russell.  Do you have that?

 Thanks
-
				Norrie,
Do you have anything on Peter COUPER (died 1880 in Abbosthall) and his wife Catherine (died 1883 in Newington), please?

Also, how far back do the headstones go as I have quite a few from that area?

				Hi Norrie,

What a great resource you have set up!

Do you have any graves of Cummings?

Am particularly interested in the whereabouts of Colin Cummings, 1851-1903. He died at Bank Mansion, Sinclairtown, Dysart.

 Wives--  1)  Joan (Burns) c. 1850-1877
 2)  Janet Ness Henderson c. 1858-1904

				Hi Norrie,

Thank you so much for all that information!

I think 101 was the manager of Dysart gas works if I remember my research--at present deep inside a cupboard.

These Cummings may be distant relatives of Colin Cummings------- have not yet established the link.

Colin was the eldest of a Cummings family that 'went'
Colin (seaman),  b.c.1793-d.1829--buried in old cemetery, St. Serf's I think it was (MI index)
 Alexander (seaman),   1825-1899
Colin (boiler -maker then wine and spirit merchant),  1851-1903
 Alexander (wine merchant). 1873-195?

It is odd Colin is not buried locally.  1903 was well before cremation started.

I doubt they were listed as Cumming. The earliest surnames I found of this family were Cummins and Cummens then they were Cummings.

Will ask for a photo. if I can find the link.
Meantime thank you again for your work.

 Kind regards,
 MairiD

Hi Gill.    No Peter L McLaren in my index, but you say he was buried in a family plot. I index with the main family on the stone, so that would be Peters
 parents.
I have these Mclarnes in Dysart & 1 in Bennochy
but have checked the photographs but no mention of Peter on any of them.

Hi, Peters parents were Peter and Christina Mclaren however they both died in Forfar and i would assume burried there or perhaps |Logierait ( where they came from). Isabella parents were Christopher Cairns and jemina ( cant recall her surname, would have to look it up). I though Peter had bought the plot and he, his wife and im told grandson were burried there. Hope that makes a difference as I have looked and unfortunately found nothing- relatives not much help! Thanks again. Gillian.

				Hi Norrie

If you've got the time, I'm looking for gravestones for the following people. I've been through all the usual lists and found nothing and the facts would suggest they were too poor to afford a stone.  But you might have turned up something I haven't!

They are all born and married in Dysart.

George Kinnaird and Agnes Raeburn (born 1760s)
John Kinnaird and Elizabeth McGregor (born 1790s)
William Page and Elizabeth Mitchell (born c1805)
James McDougall and Ann Rennie (born c1805)
George Kinnaird and Jane Weir (born 1830s)
Duncan McDougall and Euphemia Page (born 1830s)
William Kinnaird and Joan McDougall (born 1860s)
James Brown and Euphemia Kinnaird (born 1890s)

 Thanks for all your efforts.

				Hello Norrie,

I've just found out that my 3xgt grandmother Agnes Troup was buried in Abbotshall in 1853.  She was first married to William Simpson then, when he died, to William Young.  Do you have any of them in your database please?

 The GROS entry reads:
 Agnes (Troop) Simpson/Young
"William Young's widow Agness Simpson was buried in the --- (indecipherable) grave of his property 5 1/2 feet deep aged 83 years"

 Hello again Norrie

I've been doing a bit more digging on locations in Kirckcaldy for the relatives in my list.  Although they start in Dysart Parish, the census returns show a lot  them living in High St in 1851, St Clair St in 1881, 1891 and 1901 and also Long Row in 1841, 1861 and 1871.

So they are really living in the areas of Pathhead and Sinclairtown.  Eventually in my grandparents time they move further north and west.  I'm just wondering what the burial grounds would be likely to be in the 19C for Pathhead and Sinclairtown and whether I've been barking up the wrong tree by looking in Dysart.

 Any advice?

 Many thanks

 Sarah

I have my own 1881 census for Scotland and the only one I can find is
Duncan McDougal & Euphemia Page and I think I  have a stone for
Elizabeth McDougal their daughter in Abbotshall Cemetery

 772   Millar Robertson  died 1915 age 45
wife Elizabeth McDougal died 1947 age 78
daughter Margaret Robertson died 5.3.1977 age 64
SIL. John Anderson died 9.9.1954 age 67
Wife Euphemia Robertson  died 20.1.1973 age 82

There are a number of cemeteries
Barony Cemetery in Dysart this is an old cemetery but only 125 stones

Pathhead Feuars Cemetery between Kirkcaldy & Dysart  110 Stones

And Dysart & Sinclairtown Cemetery over 2000 stones still in use today

And 3 in Kirkcaldy Abbotshall, Bennochy & Kirkcaldy old Church

If you wish more lookup give me the 2 names.

Perhaps you can help me with a brick wall.  Andrew Fowler was born 1790 in Abbotshall (and died in Dundee in 1853).  I have found no record of his parents.  Do you have any Fowlers buried in Abbotshall (or nearby) between 1790 and 1840s?  Sorry for the lack of forenames, but I am stuck!  Thanks in advance for your kind assistance.

Cheers for the lookup.  That is my relative, and those are his daughters.  The family was in Ruthven on the 1841 census.  Andrew was an overseer for a jute mill.
Are there any records extant for the dissenting churches?  I know there were quite a lot in and around Kirkcaldy.  Also, do you know of any apprenticeship records for Abbotshall / Kirkcaldy / Kinghorn?
Once again, thanks for the assistance.

				Hi Norrie

Could you please tell me please if you have anything on the below?

 I have family from Abbotshall
John[died april 1837] and Euphemia BLAIR [Dec 1848] and they lost a child in 1814

 and from Kirkcaldy
James and Margaret SYMON. I don't know when they died. It was before June 1849. Margaret had her last child in 1814 and James was still alive in Nov 1835 when his daughter married, his abode then was Kirkcaldy. He was a gardener but his son was a stone mason. I am hoping there maybe a headstone.

His son Robert and wife Christian [Christina] lost 6 children [3 boys and 3 girls] between 1830- 1849. One was buried in Feb 1846 in Wemyss parish.

				Dear Norrie,
Thank you for your very prompt reply. My wife and I visited this cemetery in July last year. Unfortunately we couldn't gain access as the gates were locked and the high walls prevented any other means of getting in. We were dissappointed that after travelling all this way we would not see the headstones. I feel a little better now knowing the headstones don't exist.
Thank you for the photo and your feedback.

				Hi Norrie

Thank you in advance for your kind offer to look up your index for MI's in Kirkcaldy Cemeteries.

I have quite a few Thomsons in Bennochy Cemetery and wondered if you had a photo of my grandparent's gravestone as I have never found it.

They were David Steele Thomson (died 13th March 1962) and Bessie Goldie Thomson (MS Millar)(died 21st June 1955). There might also be a mention of their daughter, Agnes Evelyn Thomson who died 29th March 1929.

I have already found my great grandfather (Joseph Thomson) and his wife (Agnes Gemmell) and my great great uncles (Alexander Thomson) and David Thomson but not my grandfather.

 Many thanks

				Hello Norrie,
I was so excited when I cam across your posting yesterday.  We live in the United States and, at this point in time, I have no idea when we will ever be able to travel to Scotland to visit Kirkaldy.

My husband's 3rd great grandparents (and possibly his great grand uncles & aunts) are buried in Bennochy Cemetery.

Robert SKINNER (22 Apr 1816 - 13 Oct 1876) Occupation: Sexton at Bennochy Cemetery.  Residence: Cemetery Lodge
Catherine GOULD Skinner (abt 1809 -14 Jan 1870) Died at residence - Cemetery Lodge.  Cause of death: Bronchitis

 Children:
 Mary (? - 1846), Catherine (1842 - ?), Jean (1844 - ?), Robert (1848 - ?) , John SKINNER (1849- abt 1905 - immigrated to US in 1872), Peter (1851 - ?), William (1854 - ?)

I would really appreciate if you could send me the inscription and photos of the monument for Robert and Catherine Skinner if they are included in your index as well as their children if possible.  Keeping my fingers crossed!!  :)

 Thank you!!
 Melanie

 Hi Norrie,
You are terrific!  Thank you so much for the photo and inscription.  Unfortunately, I do not know much more about the children.  I found them in the 1871 census living in Kirkaldy but after that I have had not much luck.  William married Isabella Johnston but I see his family living in Midlothian in 1881.  John moved to the United States and married Katherine Powers - this is my husband's line.  I really appreciate your time.  One of these days, my husband and I (and his father too) would love to take a trip to visit Fife and to see where his ancestors are from.
 Thanks again!

From the Fife Advertiser 1 17 1852 – Simpson, John, late a  farmer Hayfield Kirkcaldy, son of Peter Simpson, a tenant Wester Gourdie, Dundee died in NY 23.12.1851.   John Simpson was born in liff 1787 and died when visiting his daughter Margaret Stoddart nee simpson in Manhattan.  Margaret was b 1 jan 1818 - where is unknown as there is no birth record.    I also cant find a definate marriage record for John Simpson.      I was wondering in your travels if you came across any Simpsons that make reference to wife, daughter or son of John c 1815 onwards until his death in 1851.

				Hi Norrie

Many thanks for all those Thomsons. Alexander Thomson and Betsy Watt, David Thomson and Elizabeth Baird and Joseph Thomson and Agnes Gemmell are all mine. I would love a photo if possible as I am sure yours are a lot better than the ones I took.

I was also wondering if you had any of a David Thomson and Ann Steele in Pathead or Dysart Cemetery?

David and Bessie must be in Hayfield Cemetery. Do you think the Kirkcaldy Crem would be able to tell me?

 Many thanks for your help.

 Kind regards

				Hi Norrie,
My father has family that passed away in Kirkcaldy.
The name is McK/MacKenzie, could be spelled either way.
Christina nee Alexander died August 4, 1960
 her daughters
Jessie Burns McKenzie died 1977 (she never married)
There was another daughter Mary McDonald McKenzie but she was most likely married and I can't find a death for her. I'm hoping the headstone may give me clue as to who she married or when she died.
Thank you so much for offering your time and help
 Janet

Hi Janet my index is built using the 2 main names on the stone
 eg.    Daniel McKenzie   Ann Robertson

You don't say what your fathers name was?
and I take it Christina Alexander was his wife?
 need some more info.

 Norrie

-
I'm sorry, here is the information

Jessie McKenzie died 1977 in Kirkcaldy but her name could be spelled Jessie MacKenzie.  Her full given name at birth was Jessie Burns McKenzie. She was never married.

Christina McKenzie died in 1960 in Kirkcaldy but again the name could be MacKenzie
 Christina's maiden name was Alexander

Throughout my family research, McKenzie has been spelled both ways, even by the same family members so it's hard to know which was used on a gravestone.
Christina's husband, John McKenzie, died in Glasgow in 1924 so I'm quite sure he won't have a gravestone in Kirkcaldy.

 Thank you very much
 Janet

nothing in index for David & Ann Steele
I see the photos are of their children

Email tell them the dates of deaths, names and you think
they are in Hayfield or may have been cremated, and hope you may get an answer.

Thanks for having a look Norrie. I'll see what's available online for Glasgow.
I've received the death notice that was in the newspaper for my great Aunt Christina MacKenzie. I copied it below.

MACKENZIE – At 218 Rosslyn Street, Kirkcaldy on the 4th August 1960, in her 96th year Christina Alexander, beloved wife of the late John MacKenzie late of Watergate, Cleish.

Can you tell me where is Watergate, Cleish? I know my gr uncle John died in Glasgow after being hit by a train. I have his death certificate.

 Thanks

Hope that makes a difference as I have looked and unfortunately found nothing- relatives not much help! Thanks again. Gillian.

.  I have a question also about one of the drylie families you gave me. george drylie and margret beall drylie  i have son Johns birth as 1916 and your inscription says he died apr 22 1922 and was 39 years old?
Hi Beans  yes your right George died 1953 not 1922 sorry

Also John Hynd and Helen Drylie is there anyway to verify that he was 10 years older than her  i have both of their births in 1869 but according to the inscriptions and subtracting his age he was born in 1879
I work from photographs and sometimes the dates are not all that clear,

Alexander Oswald and his wife had a daughter, VERE born 1825 Lochgelly, do not no if they had anymore children as i have been unable to find a birth cert for Vere, although her OPR marriage record say's" Vere Oswald, daughter of the late Alexander Oswald" and her Death cert also states she was the daughter of Alexander Oswald.

Andrew Turnbull c1791 had a son  Andrew Turnbull 1813, This is a copy of the OPR for the marriage between Andrew and Vere

The OPR: 547 Turnbull/Oswald: Upon the 12th Jan 1851 were (? cannot read) Andrew Turnbull Joiner son of the late Andw Turnbull Engineer and Vere Oswald daughter of Alexr Oswald, Farmservant and both of this Parish Married 13th by Revd John Blackie now of Abbotshall.

Vere Turnbull, widow of Andrew Turnbull, Joiner, died 1890 June 23rd 10am, Gordon Street, Leith. Aged 65, Parents Alexander Oswald(dec) and Mary Oswald (dec) formerley Black.

				Hello Norrie,

When you've got a minute can you please check to see if you details of any of the following?

James Leitch & Isabella Lambert.  I have no death record for him but she was buried in Dysart Barony 18 Apr 1859, having died 4 days earlier in Riddles Close, Leith.  Perhaps his name was added to her stone.  However, he was a sailor so may not be buried here.

John Leitch & Sophia Penman.  Although he was born in Dunfermilne he is possibly buried in Abbotshall as he lived most of his life as a coal grieve there.

David Lambert & Margaret Dewar.  I have no death record for her but he died 15 Mar 1828 and the OPR 399, Book 6, page 118 says "Buried in the middle position grave of his property, 6 foot deep"

Many thanks in advance and kind regards to you,

 Jack

				Hi Norrie,
I left a message on the Markinch gravestones yesterday too.  I have lots of folks in the Dysart/Pathhead/Sinclairtown area and would appreciate any stones you might have for them and be willing to share.  Here are some of the major ones I am interested in:

Elizabeth (Dewar) Anderson - died 24 Apr 1855 in Sinclairtown/St Clairtown at age 69.  (She was widowed for a while before her death and I believe her husband is likely buried in Edinburgh where they lived before he died)

Robert Anderson - died 21 Apr 1869 in Pathhead at age 57.
Wife Margaret (Deas) Anderson - died 31 Mar 1877 in Pathhead at age 66.

 Margaret's parents -
John Deas, died 5 Aug 1871 in Dysart, age 91.
Margaret (Page) Deas, died 27 Sep 1855 in Dysart.

 Margaret's twin sister -
Rachel (Deas) Anderson, died 22 Jan 1891 in Dysart, age 80.
Husband John Anderson, died 2 Aug 1855 in Dysart, age 48.

Thanks so much for any help or suggestions you can provide.

Thanks so much!! That is interesting that Robert died in 1933 when I have two other pieces of information that state he died in 1916; however, I haven't found him on scotlandspeople in 1916 so now I need to check 1933!!  I know for sure that it's the correct Robert Beveridge because an aunt told me that he was married to Mathilde Aeschlimann, who was supposedly a governess for the Duchess of Fife.
Will  you please send me the photo of #712- David Beveridge family?  I hadn't found the name of one of the infants that died at a young age.
What other cemeteries in Kirkcaldy do you have records and/or photos?

 Thanks again!
 Heather

Just realized that the two stories about David Beveridge stated that Robert died in 1916 when it was actually David who died in 1916.  The information was apparently copied to another story without checking the accuracy of the information.

Thanks again for the help and information.  Those Beveridges and Constables are in my lines.
I gave you the information for Cecilia Fisher incorrectly. Instead of stating Cecilia Beveridge nee Fisher I put it Cecilia Fisher Beveridge who was a daughter.  Cecilia Fisher was born in 1805 in Aberdour and died in Dysart in 1883.  Her husband Robert Beveridge was a sailor and he was born between 1804-1806 in Abbotshall.  I am having a hard time determining his mother's name. I was hoping a MI might give me a the year of his birth and with luck his parents.
Haven't determined the mother and father at the top of 649.  Another puzzle to solve.

Beans- I'll pm you and see what you have.  With luck,  I might have something you can use.

They are mine.  It's Harriet Methven Beveridge and William Methven Beveridge.  I have the death certificates for both of them.  Their parents were David Beveridge and Harriet Methven.  Harriet Methven Beveridge died giving birth to Harriet Methven Beveridge Constable in 1898 and she was married to William Tasker Constable (1871-1962).  William Methven Beveridge was married to Agnes More Gourlay.  None of these names were on the stone with David Beveridge.  If you have a picture of the stones for both/either of these families, I would appreciate it.

-
Could you see if you have any trace of William Cameron and/or wife Janet Barr? They are my 4xGt Grandparents and I know their son John was born in Pathhead in 1811. They also had William (1804 Kirkcaldy), Robert (1807 Kirkcaldy), Helen (1809 Pathhead) and Archibald (1814 Pathhead).

John, my 3x Great grandfather,  died in 1871 in Edinburgh so no need to look for him!

 Many thanks.

				Hi Norrie

Thank you for your kind offer.  I understand you do your indexing by 2 names but I am looking for a child whose parents were still alive at his death.

I am looking for a James Johnston (my Great Uncle) born 1915 and who died aged 8 in May1923 of accidental drowning at sea.  His residence at time was Rose Street Kirkcaldy.

I can give you name of parents, grandparents and great Grandparents incase he could be buried with his grt Grandparents.

James father David Johnston and Mother Christina Niven.

David Johnston's father and mother David Johnston and Barbara Hunter.  David Johnston(as married to Barbara Hunter) father and mother Robert Johnston d1913 and Janet Laing d1919.

Christina Nivens Father and Mother James Niven and Isabella Burt.  James Niven father and  mother  James Niven and Mary Ritchie.  Isabella Father and mother Alexander Burt and Jane Mitchell.

Some of these burials could be in Dunfermline or Auchterderan but am sure James would be Kirkcaldy.

Hope the list of names has not overwhelmed you.

 Many thanks Jeanette

				Hi  Norrie

Sorry slight mistake as in David Johnston and Barbara Hunter it should be Barbara Thomson.

				Hi Norrie G,
I wonder if you would mind having a look & letting me know if you have a head stone from Dysart Cemetery for :

 John Mavor (b 1/8/1870, d 8/10/1936) & his wife
 Mary Mavor (nee Syme) (b 25/4/1867, d 4/10/1931)

I know they are both buried there & have the lair reference but haven't been able to find it - not even sure if there is a stone or not.
 Many thanks in advance.

				Hi Norrie
Thanks again for looking for Robert Philp for me in Markinch.  Here is my post from this thread from July.  I understand now that you need two names, so while (as I say) it is unlikely that Elizabeth (Dewar) Anderson's husband is buried in Dysart, his name was James Anderson.

 Hi Norrie,
I left a message on the Markinch gravestones yesterday too.

Hi Brenda  is this the Agnes Wilson in the 1881 census you saw,
Robert & William are her sons  you would be better trying to find
their births on Scotlands people and see who their father was
or check for her marriage or death on Scotlands people

				Hi Norrie
I very much appreciate the work that you do. Many of the children's birth years have been estimated from the census records up to 1911.

David Peebles was bc Feb 1841 at Kingsbarns d 27 Jan 1928 age 86. [ no record of birth/baptism found] On the 1841 census of Kingsbarns he was aged 4 mths.
There was a previous David b 22 Oct 1839 d 11 Oct 1840 Kingsbarns to Robert Peebles and Ann Ramsay.

From 1881 to 1911 census, David was at Dysart. I don't have the death certificate for Ann Kinley d 1893 but she was bc1844.
 Davina d Mar 1896 was bc1885 -- Jane d Apr 1899 bc1882 --James K. d 1916 bc 1886 --Robert d 16 Aug 1933 bc 1878 and Elizabeth d Apr 1959 bc 1880.

Ann Kinley Peebles d 11 Feb 1994 aged 86 was bc 1908. On the 1911 census she is listed as a grand dau aged 3. I'm certain that she was the illeg. dau of Elizabeth. I made an error on a request for Ann Ramsay d 14 Jun 1860 Kilconquhar as she is buried in the churchyard Carnbee.

 Norrie,
Thanks!  Apologies for the delay in replying, I literally only just spotted this reply:-(

Capt. William Couper is gg-grandfather's brother and somewhere there is a letter by him written in Rawalpindi in 1861.  He joined the 93rd Sutherland Highlanders in 1852 (claiming he was 17!) and I believe he was at Balaclava . . .

I had assumed he had stayed in India as he transferred to a "native" regiment for a promotion to Sergeant but I didn't follow his records after the transfer.

If you have an image of his gravestone that would be fantastic!

				Norrie,

I had most of the information but there were a few nuggets that I will follow up.

Two items that items that have always made me wonder  and I have not been successful in investigating have been:
 1) The parents of Ann Grant who married William Smart. All I have been able to determine is that their possible names were John Grant and Eliza and possibly lived in Banffshire, Scotland. No information on siblings or parents. Their daughter was Margaret Smart.
 2) Donald G. Smart (Son of David Smart and Margaret Smart) born 1890 (Landsend, Falkland, Fife), out of wedlock. Who was he real father (Brodie has been named, an irishman). I have not been able to establish the Brodie's living near Margret. I have Donald traced to Kirkcaldy in 1911 but he does not show up anywhere until he goes to Australia, then to Canada where he married Lillian Andrews and his bother (John aka Jack) marries Lillian's sister. Lillian's family settled in Kerrobert, Saskatchewan, Canada. Once Donald and Lillian married they moved to Bruderhiem, Alberta, Canada. Donald passed away in Ft. Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada in the 1970's. I have him entering Canada three times between 1912 and 1915. I am trying to find any information regarding Donald between 1902 and 1912. I have him leaving Cape Town to Australia. He was supposed to have worked his way around by working on ships.

If you have any information regarding these two quandries i would appreciate the assistance.

That said thank you very much for the time and effort that have you spent already.

				Hi Norrie,

I'm very impressed with all this hard work you are putting in for family researchers., it really is fantastic. I was wondering if you have come across any of my ancestors in these cemeteries -

George Smart 1790 - 1863 and his wife Margaret Shand who died in 1844 (bit uncertain about birth date, between 1802 - 1806) Their son David Smart and his family have an impressive headstone in Dysart Cemetery, I thought they could also be buried nearby.

I was also looking for John Allan 1821 - 1906 and his wife Helen Penman 1828 - 1908. They had at least 13 children and always lived in Dysart.

 Thanks,

 Michael
-
				Norrie,

Looked from the maternal and paternal naming sequencing of the Smart family and James/Peter/Alexander/Elspet do not show up in at all. This is in my line and those of the siblings.

John Farmer is a hit, confirmed what pieces of information I was putting together.

 Again hats off to you!!

 Joe

Thanks so much for looking. Yes I would love to see a copy.

As for the Allans, I only know what happened to two of their daughters -
Eliza or Betsy Allan (1865 - 1896) married Matthew Penman (1865 - 1941) He remarried after her death, to his cousin Isabella Penman.
Catherine or Kate Allan (1849 - 1913) married John Mcleod (1849 - 1919) I know that they are buried in Dysart Cemetery but I believe that either they never had a headstone or it was cleared away by the council because of the vandalism.
I don't know who the rest of the children married but they were -

 william b 1850

Norrie:   Thank you so very much for your response to my message about Alexander Page and Janet Kilgour Page.  You have given me some excellent information.  I have looked and looked for Janet Page the daughter of James Page 1819 and his wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Kellock.  I found Janet on the 1861 census with her father James 1819 (my gg grandfather) and his second wife Margaret Kinghorn, her step-mother (the parents of my g grandfather also James 1864).  I could not find her death in 1861 but I will look again in Scotlands People.

Alexander Page and Janet Kilgour Page had eight children that I know of:

Alexander Page bn 1801 - dd 1864  married Janet Law bn 1801

 Janet Page 1802 - 1865 married Andrew Mitchell 1802-1869

Christian Page 1808 - death unknown, spouse unknown

 Elizabeth 1812 - 1858 married David Gourlay 1811 - 1878

David Page 1814 death unknown, spouse unknown

 John Page 1817 - 1883 married Helen Walker 1816 - 1886

 James Page 1819 - 1884 at Fife & Kinross Asylum Cupar married twice 1st.  Elizabeth kellock 1822 - 1858, 2nd wife Margaret Kinghorn 1825 - 1904.   James & Margaret were my g g grandparents.

 Jean/Jane Page 1825 - 1853 married William Anderson 1827 - 1885.   Both died in Australia.

I am very interested in obtaining more information about the parents Alexander Page and Janet Kilgour if you can help it would be very much appreciated.

 Thank you again.

I am requesting information with reference to my grandparents whom I believe are buried at Hayfield Cemetery. They both died when I was a small child and my father now has dementia and cannot clarify where they are laid to rest. I would be very grateful if you know if they are at hayfield andthe position of the grave so I can visit.

				Hi Norrie
Could you please check if you have any record of Alexander Peebles bc 1805 and his wife Margaret Davidson.

The last record found  on them was on the 1881 census at Abbotshall, Kirkcaldy with Alexander Peebles aged 74 b Carnbee and his wife aged 69.

I have checked Scotland's People for a record of their death and cannot find them.

 Regards
 Annette

Hi Annette  sorry can't find anything on index for Alexander & Margaret
see they had a number of children  who did they marry.
can check index for them to see if their parents are there

				Hi Norrie
Thank you. I'm interested to find the death record of Alexander to see if he is the son of James Peebles and Margaret Scott. None of the death indexes that I checked seemed to fit. I found he and his wife on the 1881 census at Abbotshall . I was hoping to find his death there.

Their children that I found marriages for were George m 12 Aug 1854 to Janet Turnbull  [they emigrated to New Zealand], Janet m 31 Oct 1857 to William Webster, Robert m 29 Mar 1877 to Ann Watson, Agnes m 24 Nov 1866 to Hugh Mason. James is cited as insane on the 1851 c.

 Regards
 Annette

				Hi again Norrie,

I was wondering if you had come across a headstone for David Anderson Reid 1831 - 1902 in Bennochy Cemetery in Kirkcaldy, he is buried with his wife Jessie Brown 1833 - 1916, and who I think is their daughter Margaret who died in 1902.

Also if you have come across any other of their children in Dysart or Kirkcaldy -
Two of David's children from his first marriage who came to Dysart with the family from Edinburgh -
 David Reid b 1852
 James Reid b 1858

Jessie's children from her first marriage -
 Ann Cane b 1858
Elizabeth Cane b 1856 who married Andrew Melville

 Then David and Jessie's children
 Charles Reid 1872 - 1872
Alexander Reid b 1863. He was still living in Dysart in 1916 but I am not sure when he died
Andrew Sutherland Reid b 1868. He married Jane Ormiston Purves Findlay
Caroline Reid b 1870. She married John Dickson Roberston.
 Jessie Brown Reid b 1866

Sorry for the overload of information, thanks again for your time and help

 Michael

Hello again Norrie,  Thanks so much for the information.  I am not really sure that the Walter Foster I have been tracking is the right one.  He was my Dad's biological Father of whom we know very little. I was in Kirkcaldy in 2006 and spent some time at the local library trying to find things.  I found a death notice for Walter Foster husband of Annie MacIntosh.  Through the years I had heard that he was a miner and killed in an accident. The death notice said that he was killed accidently and he was the right age I thought but I guess I am barking up the wrong family tree.  Thanks so muh for your help.

Norrie, the headstone looks like it is in a distressed condition
can you comment.Hi Angus  Remember Barony Dysart  is an Old Cemetery
not been in use since early 1900s unless you had lairs their
 for family use.

We did suffer a lot of problems with vandals in the 90s they thought
it was fun to topple headstones, and in the early 2003 the council
toppled stones which whey thought were unsafe, ( Health & Safety)
mostly they left them face down lying on their own grave, not being able
 to read the inscription
the council who upkeep the cemetery ( cut the grass ) is not responsible
 to reposition headstones
I include a general photo of the Graveyard you can see the number
 of  stones on the ground

-
				Hello Norrie
Thanks for your generous offer to help.

I am trying to track down some of my wife's family in Kirkcaldy (or maybe Pathhead or Dysart).

The person I am trying to find is Wiliam WEIR born 5 February 1870. His father was also William Weir and his mother Janet (nee Laing). I am struggling to find any record of his death.

William's wife was Caroline nee Burbeck. She died on 1 August 1946 at 90 Victoria Rd in Kirkcaldy. The death record does not show William as deceased so I am assuming he was still alive in 1946.

 Thanks & regards

Thank you for looking. YOu are a fantastic resource person Norrie.
Are there no more details either on the James Williamson senior and then junior and his wife Eliz. Whyte/White?

-
Also would love further details on Christian Williamson, wife of Robert Cock who died in 1836. Her birth year might confirm if she is indeed the daughter of James Williamson senior and Margaret PHILPS (it is the mother we haven't confirmed but probability is increasing). Still trying to find the death/burial of this lady somewhere in Fife 1793-1821. Would love a list of all Marg. Philp/Williamson burials in Fife. One has to match! How we love unusual names in genealogy and don't like common ones!

Posted by Mixedupmob in June, you suould get in touch with this person

I am looking for anyone researching the following Williamson family:
 James b. 1811
 Alexander b. 1814
 John b. 1818
 Thomas b. 1820
All were born in Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland, the children of James Williamson and Elizabeth Whyte. They all arrived in Tasmania on board the Dunmore which left Leith on 19 July 1830 and arrived in Hobart Town on 28 February 1831. Their sister Janet was also on board with them but I think I have discovered what happened to her - waiting on a death transcript to confirm my theory.
I would really like to know what happened to the boys and so far have not had any luck in my search.

				Hello Norrie!

Do you very many Robert Beveridges in the cemetery in Dysart?  I can't remember if I've asked you before to look, and sorry if I am repeating myself!  You found David Beveridge (1837-1916) and his family in Bennochy Cemetery, Kirkcaldy, but I am trying to locate his father, one of many Robert Beveridges in the area.  He was born around 1803 in Abbotshall and died between 1861 & 1871 in Dysart.  He was married to Cecilia Fisher (1805-1883).  Their daughter Mary was married to Thomas Gray Robb.  They all died in Dysart.

 Thanks!

Thanks for your trouble.  Now I'm wondering if they were cremated or the stone is on the ground, face down so it hasn't been recorded.  That happened to another line of my family at the Abbotshall Churchyard.
 I really appreciate your help!

Now I'm wondering if they were cremated

Robert is on the 1861 census, but his wife Cecilia is "head" of house on 1871 and listed at a widow in 1881.  Maybe he did die at sea, but where did his wife go?  She lived on "Back Street" from 1851 to her death in 1883.

Thanks for all your work!  I appreciate it. I would never have thought it that difficult to locate a grave until I went to the Mitchell and tried to look at the old microfilms of the graves in Glasgow- forget that!! The films were in horrible shape and too many to look through, plus I later learned from the Glasgow Herald that they were cremated!

What a generous thing to do…. I wondered if you could kindly check for any Kellock or Reid burials, if it’s not too much trouble:

David Kellock, Jean Reid        Kirkcaldy, Fife, Dron

I have David Kellock married to Jean Reid.  From Scotland's People, under Register of Marriages for Kirkcaldy, 1755, it reads: "contracted in order to marriage David Kelloch founder, of this parish and Jean Reid in the Parish of Dron and after proclamation were married the 3rd of February"

I don’t have David or Jean’s birth dates, but I believe these are their death dates:

David Kellock, son of David Kellock  b?  died Jan 1784 as shown: "Burgess Kirkcaldy: David Kellock, founder, son of David Kellock, founder(?) in Kirkcauldy 3.1.1784; Thomas son of David 29.10.1788; William, clock and watch monger, son of David 3.1.1788"

Jean Reid on 03 Feb 1755 in Kirkcaldy, Fife b? died 24 Jan 1792 as follows: "RID, JEN: spouse of David Kellock, founder; 24/25 Jan 1792" (This was listed in the list of Reid deaths so it was probably actually Reid) Died on the 24th, buried on the 25th.

From the above I am surmising that David Kellock’s father was David Kellock, and Thomas Kellock and William Kellock are his brothers.

I wondered if you have photos of their headstones, which might list their birthdates (of David Kellock and Jean Kellock, nee Reid) and the birthdates of their brothers.

Any info at all would be helpful.

 Thank you in advance

				Hi Norrie:

Thanks so much for the response and for all the work you have done.  For those of us that live in other countries, being able to talk to someone there is amazing!!

I think we're looking at the late 1800s and early 1900s for Smart/Watson and the late 1800s for Brown/Bryce.  No places for Brown/Bryce deaths but think it might be Dysart as I think Elizabeth Watson died there and the two children obviously got together as David Smart married Janet Brown.

This is the same line that ended up in Kinghorn with the marriage of James Christie McCurrach to Elizabeth Watson Smart in 1918.  James was from Govan.  His father was also James and his mother was Catherine Christie.

James McCurrach's (Sr) parents were William McCurrach and Ann Taylor (Elgin) and Catherine Christie's parents were James Christie and Christina Morrison (don't know where they were from but would guess Elgin or area if their daughter married William and Ann's son).

Thanks Norrie.  I really appreciate your help!!!
