Additional
FamilySearch shows the date as 15 May 1788. No names of parents for the couple shown

No joy here either Tom. There is a Member Submitted record for the birth at Aisthorpe in about 1765 but it doesn't tell you anymore than you know already.

I dare say you know of the five Christenings on FamilySearch of children to John and Mary at Aisthorpe between 1791 & 1807, one son was named Samuel and one of the girls, Elizabeth, named after Johns parents perhaps?

It is of course possible that John was never Christend :(

Of course, if he was the John GRUNDY buried at Scampton in 1840 aged 85, he was somewhat older than the IGI submission suggests.  I'm afraid many IGI submissions are not worth the paper they're not written on.  :-\

If someone has seen the marriage register, it may say "of Aisthorpe ... but that would be place of residence, not place of birth.

I think that you are right about him not being Christened as the family were Farmers and moved around from village to village I would suppose to find work so some of there children would not be christened . It`s john`s children and there children such a lot of them to put on my tree,   I think I will put them on the back burner till after the holidays  Thank you so much Alan.

Yes Geoff I do believe it is the same John Grundy I have seen it on many Trees on Ancestry. I may have a look around some of the villages from Aisthorpe up to  Misterton where some of the children were born but not till after the holidays are over.
                         Regards tom :)

John Grundy's wife Mary Ann is buried in the churchyard at Scampton (the next village to North Carlton). She pre-deceased him by one year and the gravestone is lying flat on the ground on the norther side of the church.
I am his 4 times great grandson and his son's grave (Hugh) is in North Carlton churchyard.
Here is the line I descend from:

Welcome to Rootschat Barry,

Hopefully Tom will answer you soon.

I just have one little problem with info posted

Burial of  John G has him age 85 in 1840 (1755) and GRO has;
GRUNDY, JOHN age 86
GRO Reference: 1840  D Quarter in LINCOLN UNION  Volume 14  Page 317

So born c 1755 not 1765?

Trish :)

Dear Trish

It is often the case that ages and DoBs get mixed up.  The Grundys did seem to, by and large enjoy longevity.  Johns son, buried in the adjacent village of North Carlton was 80 when he died.

John Grundy does not appear to be buried with his wife Mary Ann who died the year before him, there is no inscription on the tombstone except for her.  It is possible that here was no money left to afford it but his son (Hugh) and the family seem to have been covered by a temperance society insurance policy.  They have a prominent plot in the churchyard not far from the Lychgate and church door in North Carlton church.

The house they lived in in NC is still there, just outside the village.

What is quite remarkable is that although they appear to have been only farm labourers and cottagers they lived to ripe old ages.    I am going tomorrow to look at some probate records.  This should indicate the financial position they were in.

The next generation after Hugh see to have left the land to go and work in the rapidly industrialising cities.  My great, great grandfather came to Lincoln to work in the ironworks. Two of the pubs he lodged in are still here.  One of them is called the Inly Tavern and his granddaughter, my grand mother was called Ivy.

Regards
Barry

Dear Tom

Thanks for the info.  So our common ancestor is even further back by one generation and from East Leake.  Two sons of Hugh Grundy (Joseph's nephew) moved to Sheffield in the mid 1800's when my G G Grandfather moved to Lincoln.  This was of course a time when very many people were moving off the land to go and work in industry.

Regards
Barry

I too am trying to find an elusive Grundy - but I don't think he is related to your families.

My Grundy interest is Joseph Grundy who was born about 1743.  He married Mary Dunn of Wrawby on 27 October 1766 by licence. JG farmer bachelor of Owston aged 23 and MD spinster of Wrawby aged 19.  They had, I believe 8 children and when Joseph died he was a widower of Long Sutton.  He was buried 14 July 1785 at Holbeach.  His 4 youngest children (Joseph, Lydia, Stephen and John) were minors and he appointed guardians for them.

I can trace Mary's family back several generations, but I have had no success with Joseph.  Can anyone help? :)
