I have an ancestor William Davis who was an Auctioneer & Appraiser in Bridgnorth, Shropshire ca 1791. He is listed as
Davis Wm., Appraiser and Auctioneer
under Bridgnorth Principal Inhabitants
Source: The Universal British Directory of Trade, Commerce, and Manufacture 1791. Volume the Fifth.
Does anyone know what social status he would have had, and was there any register or guild of auctioneers where there may be more information about him and his trade?
Regards,
Maggie

hello maggie hope this may kick start your post , ive had a google round and alhough there is an institute of auc and app in scotland it certainly doesn,t look as if any sort of governing body exists in england , as to status i would think a persons honesty and integrity would have given them a certin level of social status , only that occupation was and is open to a certain amount of for want of a better word fiddling as with a lot of things buying and selling wise as the old saying goes buyer beware i cant remember the latin quote for that
happy new year to you and yours
