Title: Old leicester Photographers
Post by: Andy1962 on Sunday 19 December 10 16:56 GMT (UK)
I have obtained a photograph of my Grandmother - along with her Mother and younger brother.  Knowing that she was born in 1893 - I estimate that the picture was taken around 1903 or a little later.  The address on the photograph is 107 Belgrave Gate.  Unfortunately, the name of the photographer has been ripped off and all that is legible is the last three letters, which are "HES".

It may be a long shot but does anybody have any way of finding out the name of the photography studio?

Just to satisfy my curiosity.......

Uhhm Belgrave Gate, I know it well...  If my Nan was still here - she would no doubt remember the photographer..    Actually there is still a photographers shop in Belgrave Gate.  I wonder ?!?!?  will check it out.  bfn

Spectrum Photos

Thanks for your reply - I've checked out Spectrum and I they're too far towards the clock tower.  Looking at other numbers I can recognise - I think that the place I'm looking for is where Kingstone is now.

AAAh so on the other side of the road... and past the mini junction.. ... Yes just Kingstones now and that has been there since as far back as I like to remember...   I went past on the bus last week on a visit to the town centre and couldn't believe it was still there..  I will ask around to see if anyone remembers the photographers name..

 ;)

Just a thought maybe Mike will know...

In Wright's Directory of Leicestershire & Rutland, 1899

107 Belgrave Gate:

Head Js. Roper, hse. furnisher - They were just vacanting the premises

In  Kelly's Directory of Leicestershire & Rutland, 1908 There are no listings for 107 Belgrave Gate only no. 103 and 109

In Kelly's Directory of Leicestershire & Rutland, 1916

107 Belgrave Gate was:

Leicester Distress Committee Unemployed Registration Office

Doesn't help with your quest but at least give a time frame  ;)

to give this article at least some semblance of respectability, I'd better discuss the photographer. Frederick Hughes operated a studio in the town of Leicester from the late 1880s until at least 1906. He moved to Leicester from Stonehouse in Gloucestershire around 1888. The design on the reverse of the card mount is printed in gold ink on a glossy bright red surface, and is of a style which started to become popular during the late 1880s. The address shown is Campbell Buildings, 10 Belgrave Road. Heathcote & Heathcote (1982) list the following addresses of studio premises operated by Hughes:

1888-1898: Campbell Buildings, 12˝ London Rd, Leicester
1900: 1 Argyle Terrace, Belgrave Rd, Leicester
1902: 29 Belgrave Rd, Leicester
1902-1906: 109 (or 107) Belgrave Gate, Leicester

Hope this is what your looking for
Bev

Hi "LAC Williams" is actually SAC Williams: Samuel Anthony Cox Williams of 90 Granby Street Leicester.  He was my gt grand aunt's husband.  I would be interested to know who Elsie Green's brother was!  I have several photos of his and if I have another one of Mr Green I would be pleased to email it to you FOC.
