Looking for info on Edmund Willcox, born 1801 in Wells, Somerset. Wife's name was Rachael (last name unknown, born in Langridge, Somerset). Children were George Edmund, John, James, Edmund & Charles, all born in Bath. I'm trying to find Edmund's parents names and his wife's last name.
Thanks!

Just looked at all baptisms and it appears that could be the wrong bride. There are another Edmund and Rachel in Bathwick and he was a waterman
Just looked at 41 image of census and maybe the correct bride after all.The children are as you said and Rachael spelt same and Edmund is a waterman.

Thanks for all your help! Edmund seems to go back and forth between printer and waterman unless it is somehow two different Edmunds (but the children seem to fit one!).
I'm not sure about Jane though, Pughy, probably related but there are lots of Willcox families around!

Hi Lori,
I came across this family a couple of years ago when helping a friend with her tree. They were very confusing.
There were definitely two Rachels with sons Edmund. In 1861 Edmund and Rachel were at Villa House, Bathwick, but another Rachel Willcox was in Henrietta Street, Bathwick. a widow with children William and Emily. I never found her in 1851 then, but I have now. Her husband was John, High Baliff of the County Court. They also had children Louisa and Edmund. So there were two Edmunds about, with mothers called Rachel but different father's names. From BathBMD we can see that Edmund's wife's maiden name was Cryer, the other was Richence.
Looking at the baptisms, it does seem that Edmund senior was a printer and a water bailiff, John was a chair-maker before becoming High Bailiff.
Assuming you know your ancestor's father's name was Edmund and not John, then Edmund and Rachel would seem to be the right parents.
Rachel was born in Langridge in 1800, to John and Hannah. John Cryer married Hannah Davis at Charlcombe on 20 nov 1785. (from FreeREG)
(My friend's ancestor was a Mary/Maria Wilcox. He husband was a son of the Richard and Mary Osman who lived in the same house as Edmund and Rachel Wilcox in 1861. Yet it seems her father was a William Wilcox from Burbage in Wiltshire, with no obvious connection to Edmund Willcox.)

Hi David,
Thank you for all that info! The one thing that jumped out at me was the name Richence. That name is definitely in my family so maybe I am mistaken in having Edmund rather than John in my tree! I will have to devote some time to sorting all this out. My husband's great granduncle was George Richence Willcox, son of George Edmund Willcox b.1824. There is also an old prayer book in the family with the names James, William and/or Thomas Richence. The book was given as a gift to Edith Richence in 1823. I'm still waiting to get a copy of it from my husband's uncle.
I had Edmund Willcox b.1801 and Rachel as George Edmund's parents. Did John have a son named George Edmund as well?
Thanks so much!

Hi again, David,
George Edmund Willcox married Frances Elizabeth Willcox and SHE was the daughter of John and Rachael. So it seems I have both of these families in my tree! Goodness, how confusing!
Thanks for all your help!

Hi Lori
I would guess that the two families were related before George Edmund and Frances Elizabeth married. Marrying a cousin was much more common in those days. Both families using the name Edmund also suggests that.
I wonder if my friend's Willcoxes are also related. Perhaps a common ancestor moved from Burbage to Wells and then Bath, having children in each place.
I live near Bath and the Record Office there has copies of the Wells registers. I'll have a look for Edmund when I'm next there. Probably won't be till after Christmas, snowed in at the moment.

I don't suppose anyone knows anything about George Harding the Father of Henry Willcox b. 1830 Butleigh, Somerset. Mother Edith Willcox who never married. George was a Soldier. Hoping sometime will find out what happened to George, probably died in India. Thanks, Syljun

I do have an Edith Willcox b 29/5/1820 Bath. but she married Thomas WIlton. Can't find a George Harding.

Unfortunate. There are quite a few members of Willcox family at Butleigh, Somerset but it's George I need, he seems to be the culprit. The village where he was born is very near Butleigh. Thank you for your time. Syljun
