I wonder if anyone has any information on a family called Darby in Athboy.
I think John Darby married a Jacob from Kildare. They may have had a shop on the main street.
Any info welcome.

you didn't mention any approx. years for your Darby family....
there is a family with surname Darby, occupation shopkeepers listed in Athboy on the 1911 census.
see : Darby household, Market St, Athboy (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Meath/Athboy/Market_Street/728995/)
looking at the OSI map from the 1890s, Market street seems to be the old name for the main street.
Father John and wife Annie are both born in Co. Meath and son John, age 16 on the census, is a Chemist Apprentice.

here's a possible cross-match for the marriage - and it's in Co. Kildare :
Name: John Darby
Registration District: Naas
Event Type: Marriage
Quarter and Year: Apr - Jun 1878
volume : 2 / page : 709
Name: Anne Jacob
[same index details]
I had a look for the familiy on the 1901 census and it shows Co. Kildare as Annie's place of birth :
Darby household, Market St, Athboy - 1901 (http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Meath/Athboy/Market_Street/1620276/)

Good.. Im pretty sure this is the one.
My grandmother Elizabeth Lawlor nee Jacob came to live in Athboy probably mid 1880s.
She was born in Kildare 1878 I think.
The question is from where in Kildare did she come from to Athboy.
Ive heard she came from Nurney but I cannot be sure and this the bit of info Id like to get.
Thanks in advance

A marriage cert will give you more details which should help your search (e.g. father's name & occupation, residence of the bride and groom etc), especially if she was living at home at the time.
Have you searched Kildare for possible births already ?
I was looking at the mention of 1878.... Anne/Annie was born before Civil registration (c1859 to c1861)

Here is what I know at the moment..............
My GGM was Roseanna Jacob from Drumsru Kildare. She married Thomas Lawlor KIldare 1867 . They had two or poss. three children one of them was Elizabeth Lawlor born 1868/9 . They lived in Newbridge.
It seems that both Rosanna and husband Thomas died mid 1870s. leaving infants.
My grandmother Elizabeth always said she was from Nurney. .
I know she stayed in Athboy (Darbys shop I think)
Anne Jacob Nurney married John Darby . .... There could be a connection.
I want to know if there is a connection for sure and if so where in Nurney did Elizabeth live before
she moveed to Athboy.
Tks.
So there it is.....
Tks

Marriage certs for Elizabeth and Anne sound like they way to proceed. If the father's name and occupation on both are the same then they are probably sisters - if not you would have to check wider for a connection (e.g. if the fathers for Elizabeth & Annie are brothers). Since Annie's marriage took place in Kildare it could be that her residence on the cert will be a home address...
Have you already located the marriage for Elizabeth ?

Yes I think I should look for Annies marriage cert. I got Elizabeths cert but there is no Kildare addr. shown.

Hi, I do have some limited information on the Darby family from Athboy, Ireland.
I am a descendant of William (Gulielmus) b 1858 and immigrated to Australia (I have quite a lot of info on William).
I know that Peter b 1850 immigrated to the USA and married Ann Shaughnessy. I have a photo of the Darby shop that you mention in your original message. Other siblings are John b 1852 (married Ann Jacob), Ann b 1856, Mary b 1864 and Bridget b 1868. I have not been able to find any other info on the daughters Anne, Mary and Bridget and was wondering if anyone has any suggestions on my brick wall. The parents of these Darby children were William Darby & Bridget Fox. Thank-you in advance, Valerie

Thank you for your reply. Plenty of interesting stuff there and a great surprise
to get new info after a long time.
Re Ann Jacob. Do you know if she was from Meath or maybe Kildare.
Re Ann Shaughnessy. Do you know if she had any Canadian connection.
I would love to see the shop photo.
I will also look into William Darby/Bridget Fox some more.
Again thanks

I am glad I found your 2010 posting as I have not found many people researching the Darby family in Athboy.
I have Ann J born in Kildare abt 1860 and Ann S born in Athboy abt 1850. I recently found a descendant of Peter & Ann via Ancestry.com
I have just joined Rootschat and was told that after I post 3 messages (this is my third) I will be able to contact Rootschat members directly. I will try to contact you directly and see if I can get you a copy of the photo.
Are you related to the Darby family?
-
I dont think Im related to the Darby family but I think I might be related to the Jacobs . My great
grandmother was a Jacob from Kildare. She married a Lawlor in Kildare. They had two and possibly three children. My grandmother was Mary (Elizabeth) Lawlor.
As far as I know she left Kildare when she was young ( teenager or younger) and lived with the Darby family. I dont know the Jacob/Lawlor/ Darby connection ..yet.
What Im trying to find out is where exactly in Kildare did my grandmother live.
You can do a p m with photo as far as I know.
Thanks

When I get a chance I'll see if I can find out any other info for you as I am a member of Ancestry.com.
What do you mean by 'p m'?
Thanks, Valerie
PS What is your first name?
