I'm searching for information on my late father. He was born in Sussex England in 1919 & then moved to Baysville Canada & then returned to England in 1937to join RAF.
-
hi,,there is a brief mention in the 2nd supplement to the London Gazette dated Friday 11th August 1944.
It is probably noting his appointment as a Sergeant. the entry says
June 1944 610083 Sgt Ernest Dudley Brockhurst {55711}
not much info i know,,,but at least you know he was a Sergeant in the RAF,,and possibly his service number.

It would be a great help to see the 1911 Census entry . Thank you
-
Do you know approximately what year your father emigrated to Canada? Did he come with his parents and if so do you know their names?

We are not allowed to do 1911 look ups on Rootschat.
But if he was born in 1919 he isn't going to be on it anyway ::)

I've searched outgoing UK passenger lists, incoming Canadian passengers and incoming passenger lists for various American ports and can't find anything regarding your father. I'm wondering whether he was in Canada when he was with the RAF. I know there were some training facilities about a 1/2 hour from Baysville at the Muskoka Airport during WWII.

Going by his 1919 birth I think this must be the parents marriage?

I have found out a lot about his family in Britain but it is the years he spent in Canada that remains a mystery. Before he died he began writing his life history. He states that his awareness of it began in1924 in Baysville. He said that his mother married a canadian soldier who was gassed in WW1 & that he died in 1926 or 27.He states that his mother died in 1936 & his grandparents in 1937 within a day of each other. None of this corresponds with British records stating his fatherdied in 1962 & his mother in 1965. I'm beginning to think he may have been sent to Canada & lived with another family.
-
Is it possible that Frederick and Florence were not his birth parents and they adopted him after the death of his parents? Does a birth registration get modified after an adoption to list his adopted parents and not his birth parents?
Looking at some family trees at Ancestry for Frederick who married Florence, they indicate that his parents (William Brockhurst and Sarah Rice) both died in 1937. So there does seem to be some truth to his story.

I have now discovered that my late father was taken in by an older couple in the late 1920s in Angmering Sussex. I was wondering if perhaps they took him to Baysville Canada but unfortunately I do not have a name for this couple. Is it possible to check if a couple emigrated to Baysville from Angmering with a a young boy at that time.
-
Treganna, there are ships lists to check to see who emigrated but you would need to know their names. Thousands travelled to Canada and USA that way ;)
-
Unfortunately I do not know the name of the couple he went to live with. A canadian member checked & said she couldn't she my dad's name on any passenger lists. Thanks

No one of that name came back to Liverpool in 1937 from Halifax.
I would imagine they changed his name?
I see he died in Cardiff in Aug 1996 his DOB is given as 24 Jan 1919.

Do you have a thread on the England board.
Two of your posts are looking for information of Ernest living with Peckham's in Ferring nr Worthing. What was the source of this information. Is it possible that he used the name Peckham at some point.
Where did you get information that your father left from Halifax in 1937 bound for Liverpool. What was your source for this information.
Any information that you share with us can help in your search.

If you think he lived in Baysville, Ontario at an early age, he may have gone to school in the Baysville area which is in Lake of Bays, Muskoka, Ontario. If you contact the public library in Baysville, they may be able to help you determine which school he may have attended and also where you might look to find his attendance records. It is possible to trace someone with the birth date and forenames even if he was using a different last name.

In an early post, you mentioned it would be nice to see the 1911 census entry. What were you looking for in the 1911 census. I did check the 1911 census for Muskoka and there were no surnames Brockhurst or Peckham that showed up. You can check the census at

The information about him leaving Canada from Halifax came from his own story he began to write before he died.
His story & the information I have receieved about his early life do not match up.
It is all a mystery that I don't think I will ever know the truth.
he mentioned going to an airshow near where he lived & this inspired him to try & join the RCAF but he said they were not recruiting in 1937 but he was told by another person that he should go to England & join the RAF.
