Title: Arrival of Jabez Heasman in Ch.Ch. 1870-74 ' help please. COMPLETED
Post by: Mestalla on Monday 13 December 10 17:56 GMT (UK)
Hallo, I need to prove that Jabez Heasman did come from England 1870-1874 and would therefore be the Uncle to John Joseph there. I must have searched close on 100 passenger lists because I have 5 years to cover and many different ports to be resident in Christchurch during this period.
I need to prove his parents or place of birth or time of arrival. I have found the death of Jabez Heasman in  1923 ref 9411 The trouble is the age given was 98   whereas mine would have been 88.
I dont mind paying for the online confirmation, but dont fancy doing this if he is not my one.
If anyone is going near the Archives and could help, I would be very grateful as you can imagine.
Thanks Mestalla

If you look at BMD online
there appears to be registrations for births parents Jabez/Jabey HEASMAN and Mary ann
from 1871 onwards
then there are matching school records for children at Christchurch and Timaru

Interesting one of the children ELLEN GERTRUDE HEASMAN was born 27 Feb 1873 and has school records with parent Jabey Heasman but earlier in the 1883 year and ELLEN with same birthdate has parent as JOHN HEASMAN ??maybe they made a mistake and got two girls from 2 families mixed up

One of Jabez children leaves school 8 June 1893 destination England (Edwin Ernest Heasman)

won't check them all as its not what you asked, just diversion which shows hewas around area

You mention that Jabez could be uncle of John Joseph, but given they are having children in same time period..could he be a brother
Bye
Althea

Hi Mestalla

I can possibly help sort out this HEASMAN "business".   :D
Just need to re-check some records firstly.  I'll get back to you.

In the meantime, you may like to have a look at this tree (though perhaps you've already seen it ?)

Hi Mestalla

They took a bit of finding, my HEASMAN notes.    ;D

So yes, I can now confirm that the Jabez HEASMAN whose death (1923) appears on the NZ index, is in fact the man born c. 1835.   The "age 98 years" is an error on the index, and should in fact read as "88 years".   :)

I also have the following amongst my notes :

Jabez HEASMAN
Buried :   7 August 1923
Residence:    Cheviot, North Canterbury
Age:   88 years

Record No.    BSC1  4983
[Source:  Baptisms, Marriage, Death, transcriptions for Canterbury NZ - Christchurch Library index cards / records. ]

and also for his wife  ...

Mary Ann HEASMAN
Buried:   8 July 1937
Age:   92 years
Residence:   Templeton, Canterbury NZ
Record No.   BSC1

The "BSC" reference denotes the Barbadoes Street Cemetery, Christchurch, but unfortunately many of the records are not available online.

More to come ... see next post.

Hallo, I need to prove that Jabez Heasman did come from England 1870-1874 and would therefore be the Uncle to John Joseph there.

It seems from the "Turley Tree" that Jabez (1835) had an older brother Abraham HEASMAN (b. 1817) and that this Abraham was the father of John Joseph HEASMAN (born c. 1844).

Certainly though, there was some sort of family connection.

Baptisms - Christchurch, NZ

*  Jabez and Mary Ann HEASMAN were sponsors (godparents) of Frederick HEASMAN - born to John and Emma HEASMAN on 9 May 1875.

*  John and Emma (mistranscribed as "Eliza") HEASMAN, were sponsors of Albert Edward and Edwin Ernest HEASMAN (twins), born 5 March 1879, to Jabez and Mary Ann.

I can't tell you precisely when these HEASMANs arrived in New Zealand.  I've never been able to find them on passenger lists - (surname probably "misspelt" or the particular passenger lists no longer exist.)    I note on the other thread, that  "kiwianna" has said (in relation to Charlotte d/o John & Emma) ... "Charlotte's parents were John and Emma who I found coming out to NZ in 1874".
[As she hasn't given the name of the ship, I can only assume that this date has been deduced from the "years in NZ" which appears on John Joseph's cemetery record and works out to be c. 1874 ? ]

Oooh  ... have just noticed your incoming message   ...

Hi Terry

Jabez HEASMAN and Mary Ann (THOMAS) his 2nd wife, married on 26 December 1869 at Trinity Church, Marylebone, London.

Their 1st child, daughter Mary Ann, arrived just over a year later - born at Christchurch NZ on 28 December 1870 (her birth was registerd in 1871).

John Joseph and Emma HEASMAN's second set of twins (Abraham and Charlotte) were born 8 March 1873 (baptised at Camberwell, Surrey, 27 April 1873).
Their next child was Frederick, born Christchurch NZ on 9 May 1875.

Incidentally, I notice the "Turley Tree" has a few "errors" re: John and Emma's children.  (Will add further info in a following post - tomorrow).

Hallo Lu,  yes I know there are errors on the Turley Tree, its easily done because he copies down from other treees that may have errors. I am on Genes Reunited where entries have been wrong, but I cant correct if two branches are connected, you have to delete all the way back to the start, no thanks.
Yes Abraham and Jabez were brothers 1817 and 1835 and were sons of another Abraham b.1785..They keep going till the end dont they....Terry

Hi Spades,  thanks very much. I see bits in the newspaper but am not successful finding the boat. Althea has sent lists now so I may make some progress. But the big hurdle has been crossed now because it has been proved that Jabes is my relative
He would be the brother of my g.grandfather

Hi again Mestalla (Terry)

Gosh, I just re-read my reply # 8.    ::)

Sorry  ... I should have done a much better job at explaining.    ;D

The dates we have (from official sources) - marriage, London, 1869, and birth of child in Christchurch 1870 - mean that Jabez and Mary Ann HEASMAN travelled to NZ ....

between --  26 December 1869 and 28 December 1870.

So that narrows your search, considerably.    :)

Mestalla

The "Mary A." quoted above, is from my HEASMAN  family - born London 1841, and the older sister of my g-g-gran.
(She was escaping from her husband in Melbourne and travelled to Hokitika using her maiden name. )  :D
