I've seen a few posts from a while back about this man.
I'm looking for infomation re. his move to utah as I cannot find anything except the news report in the Hull Packet.
I'm also looking for information regarding his daughter Charlotte's marriage to John Patchett and whether or not John was the father of Charlotte's son George William.
I know George and his cousin Thomas were brought up by their grandmother Ann. But I cannot find much about why or the whereabouts of Charlotte or Mary during those years.
Any help re. any of this line would be an amazing help.

Hi Sillgen.
George Bishop was born around 1821 I think, I haven't got any records yet.
Charlotte Bishop was born 2 august 1852
George appears to have been a mormon preacher in Keyingham yorkshire, but either move to utah with his family on 3rd June 1853 or (more likely in my mind, but no proof yet) ran off with another woman leaving his family alone.
Charlotte herself is also a mystery, as she appears to have had an illig. son in 1871 then married under the name Burton using an age of 26 in 1881 when she was actually around 29.
As you can see I'm pretty confused. Just wanna see if anyone has anything that'll clear some of this up for me.

Hi Tracy,
Charlotte Bishop was my great grandmother so we must be distantly related.
Charlotte Bishop *married John Patchett 24 April 1881 in Sculcoates. Her son George William was born illegitimately in 1871 - no father's name on the birth certificate. I'm pretty sure George wasn't John Patchett's child as John was working as a farm servant in his native Lincolnshire on the 1871 census.
(* the marriage certificate wrongly gives Charlotte's surname as Burton but I'm sure it's the right one - everything else fits. Plus, if you're local to the area like I am, you'd know that there is a village called Bishop Burton around here and I think that somewhere along the line - either the marriage registrar or a transcriber - has transposed the surname).
As for Charlotte's father George Bishop, I came across that Hull Packet item as well but I've never been able to find him on any passenger lists to America (though there aren't many of them online for as early as 1853). The business about him ending up in Utah and having something to do with the Mormon church is something I'm still sceptical about as I've yet to see or hear any concrete evidence. The newpaper article describes George as a Primitive Methodist preacher NOT a Mormon, though I'm no expert on religions so I don't know if there is any corrolation between the two. I'd be interested to hear if you have any other information.

Free BMD has the following death registration:
Deaths Dec 1902
BISHOP George 73
Patrington 9d 214
This is the right district for Keyningham, although the age is a bit young for "your" George, but so far I haven't spotted him on any census later than 1851... :-\
Added: NO - I think this is a George Wm BISHOP from Norfolk who is in Withernsea (same reg. district) in 1901, so that rules him out.
-
Manchester : Most likely not him for the death. Seem's he just vanished lol.
Got them on the census' though. It's obvious he didn't take his family off to utah with him eh?
Jillruss - Charlotte was my great great great grandmother! Seem's there's a couple of generations between us hehe.
My Nanna is the daughter of Grace Bishop, Who in turn was the daughter of George William Bishop, Charlotte's first son.
I've sent you a PM :D

Hi Tracy, my great grandfather was Thomas James Bishop b 12th feb 1861 Keyingham, his mother was Mary Ann Bishop b 28th may 1842, also there was no fathers name on on Thomas's birth certificate, so i am having trouble getting any further back, i think we may also be related, and to jillruss aswell

Hey 2tone, sorry for the loooooong delay in replying. I took a good long break from research for the winter. Well.. more like hibernated completely lol.
I've had a look and it looks like we might possibly be distant cousins!
Our George's mum charlotte had a sister called Mary Ann, who had a son Thomas. I'm sure you've probably found Thmas living with his grandmother Ann at some point? I don't have the dates with me at the moment.
Not sure if I can find anything for Thomas's father though. I think Jillruss will be better at tracing that sort of thing... well if she hasn't already hehe. Jill is one amazing researcher.

Hi
My name is Rona Edwards (nee Dawson). Mary Ann Bishop was my great grandmother. She married James Dawson. They had a son Fred my grandfather. I have been trying to find out more about both family's. Any information or copy certificates would be most helpful.
Kind regards
Rona

Hi Rona,
Another member of the Bishop clan! I haven't done that much research into my Charlotte's siblings but I have Mary Ann's marriage to James Dawson in 1870. She had 3 illegitimate children that I know of before the marriage: Thomas in 1861, Emily Jane in 1864 and Agnes in 1866.
James Dawson was married previously and must have been widowed as they had some of his children by his first wife living with them on the 1871 census and afterwards. You probably already have the family on the 1871-1901 censuses in Sutton?
I did find a Bastardy Examination for Mary Ann's father George Bishop's birth in 1816 to Rebecca Bishop naming his father so there may be more to find.
If Tracy and 2Tone are still on Rootschat and get notification of this post, I'd be interested to know if they've made any inroads into the 'Did George Bishop go to America?' puzzle. I haven't! Not through want of trying!!!! ::)
