Hi.
Is there any way to find a birth by searching the mother?
Beattie Miller gave birth to a girl in 1905 (I think).
The birth took place at Mrs. Nolan's, Oxford Street, South Bank, Middlesbrough. The child was given the name May Johnstone, but efforts to locate her failed.
Help please.
Bill.

Hallo Bill,
I have searched with the information you have given and found the following:
May Johnston
Middlesbrough
Yorkshire
1901
Oct-Nov-Dec
Vol 9D
Page 641
Of course, I am not sure if this is the right person, but I searched from 1900 to 1906 and this May Johnston is the only one born in Middlesbrough.
Hope this helps.

Hi Bill,
Have a look at the 1911 index for North Yorkshire Beatrice Miller and perhaps "Mary" Johnstone.
Sorry, not allowed to do look-ups

Hi. Viv and Ceeoh,
Thanks for your input. I thought I had found May on the 1911 census living in Newcastle with her (Grand)parents. But I will check both of your leads.
I think 1901 birth may be a bit early as she was recorded as being 6 years old in the 1911 census. But you can never tell with certainty ages given on census records.
Is there any way to check it's the right parents before buying a birth certificate?

Ceeoh,
I've just checked the 1911 census for a Beatrice Miller but I can't find Mary Johnstone with Beatrice.
What index did you mean please?

1911 census index. The index wouldn't show them as being together but if you had access to the transcriptions there may have been May (transcribed as Mary?) with one of the Beatrice shown on the index.
Not sure if one can specify checking parents on certificates any more.
Also, have you tried the Tees Valley Index - again, not sure what years are covered
www.teesvalley-indexes.co.uk (hope that's the correct addy it's a while since I used it).

Ceeoh,
I tried the Tees Valley Index a while back it came up with two Mary's but the years of birth were not what I expected. I think I may have to try and purchase them to see if Beattie was the mother.
Thanks,

Hi Bill
I see the May Johnston birth on the tees-valley index is 1901. There is a phone number for the Stockton Register Office, perhaps you could phone them if you don't live in the area.
The Cleveland entries give an option to submit required name and parent/s name, I think they check and just tell you if it is correct or incorrect, but Stockton don't give that option - so maybe they would advise yes or no on the phone - it's worth a try if you are in the U.K.
Ceeoh
Good luck with your search

Thanks Ceeoh, phoning is worth a try.

I don't know if anyone is still interested in this post after so long but there is a twist.
My wife and daughter gave DNA samples ( daughter and granddaughter of May ) and my daughter followed the leads. May always thought her mother died in childbirth.
It turns out May had 9 half sisters / brothers. Beatrice Miller was her Mother. But we still haven't found her birth certificate. Beatrice had May? Baptised in Middlesbrough 1905, as Mary B. Miller. She then left her to be brought up by her father's parents in Newcastle upon Tyne.
We are still looking for Mary . Mays birth certificate. Regards Billr.

hi Bill, have you checked out the birth q3 1905 of Beatrice May MILLER MMN JORDISON Gateshead 10a 1034?
Just possible the JORDISON may be a mixed up JOHNSTONE.
edit - no - seems she died in 1906.

The GRO Index has an entry for Amy Beatrice Miller born 1901 J Quarter in MIDDLESBROUGH Volume 09D Page 567 (I wonder was her real name possibly Amy, known in the family as May?). MMN is Russon.
The only Beatrice Miller in the 1901 census in Middlesbrough is Beatrice Miller, Married, born 1879 in Middlesbrough.
She lived at 28 Boswell Street with husband George (b 1876, Gateshead, Iron Foundry Moulder), daughter Amy (under 1 born Middlesbrough) and 13 year old Alice Russon, domestic servant born Middlesbrough.

Hi, trying to build a picture first of the mother. When the daughter was born atOxford Street, South Bank, Middlesborough the house in 1911 was occupied by Anthony Nolan & Lucy Louisa nee' Miller. Is this the sister do you know of the mother. Lucy Louisa Miller was born 1873 in Chard, Somerset, her mmn being North.

I am thinking that the birth of May MILLER/JOHNSTONE may never have been registered.
That lead me to wonder how come back in 1910 when this query was first raised you "knew" that May had been born in Mrs NOLAN's house in Middlesbrough if you do not have a birth certificate. A baptism might mention a parish or street but not a particular house in my experience.
I can see May JOHNSTONE age 6 and 16 in Newcastle with her grandparents in 1911 and her widowed Grandmother and probably father William in 1921 - both times at 21 Villa PLace. What I have not investigated is how many of the half sisters and brothers you mention were from her mother or her father. Not that I need to know - just nosey.

May's exact dob was the 9th August 1905--died sq 1994.
