Hi Everyone
I am seeking information about the following person:
Samuel BROWNUTT (BROWN/BROWNE/BROWNETT). He was tried on the 30th September 1816 for 'Desertion', and sentenced to 14years, and transported as a convict to Australia in 1817 aboard the 'Lord Eldom' His trade was listed as 'Shoemaker', and he was born in 1788 a native of London. On his Certificate of Freedom in 1830 it notes 'Chatham Court Marshall'.
My main enquiry would be to find out as much information on his 'Military' record and about his trial for desertion.
Can anyone assist me by letting me know if there are any records held for this period. If he was a soldier, then what regiment was he in? If he deserted, then how long was he gone?
How far back do the English Records go back and how do I start to find out about this person.
Hoping someone can help with my enquiry.

I would assume he was a Royal Navy or Royal Marine given he was Court Martialed at Chatham. I would begin your search here.

Thank you for the information Seaweed. I am not aware if he was a Marine or Navy man. The only reference I had was on his Certificate of Freedom, which stated the facts I mentioned. His trade was a Shoemaker, and his name offically was BROWNUTT. My next question is: Would any of these records be held outside Kew? I live in Australia and do not have the reources or finances to check things out in England. Thanks again

As far as I am aware, this records are not available outside of the UK.
You should be able to order this document from Kew.
Hit the ordering and viewing options on the link I posted and ask for a quote. If it is outside of your budget, let me know and I will try and take a look next time I visit.

Hi Seaweed
Thanks again for the information. I have submitted my request for an estimate. I hope I gave them enough information. Haven't done this before. They say "You learn something new every day". Well I agree, and must add "It's good to try something new every day".
Will now await the estimate and then let you know what I will do next. It is so easy when you know how.

OK see what they turn up. If you can get hold of the record and he is not there at least we can eliminate him being RN or RM so that leaves him as Army. Assuming of course that his Certificate of Freedom has the correct information.
You say he was transported on the ship LORD ELDOM I suspect this is a typo and the name of the ship was LORD ELDON is this correct?

Hi Seaweed
Yes, you are correct. It was the 'Lord Eldon'. I had made the mistake. I had Eldom in my head from an ancestor born in Warwickshire. Must be a bit more careful when writing things. Sometimes the brain is slower than the typing fingers, or maybe the brain is set in it's ways. Appreciate you letting me know. I would have probably kept using Eldom without thinking. Will let you know when I receive the estimate.

Hi Wendy,
Did you find the Military Records for Samuel Brownett/Brownult b.1788 in London. I also have his Certificate of Freedom.
I am doing a family tree for a friend. I ordered the marriage record of his son Samuel Brownett b.1822. His son married Mary Jane Thornton 28 Jun 1898 Judge Street Woolloomooloo NSW. Samuel jnr. was a Fisherman.
His son states his father was a Shoemaker. There is some confusion on Ancestry with another Samuel Browne/Brownett born in Ireland who was a Sailmaker.
Have you found any other information?
Robyn.

Hi Robyn,
Yes I have a lot of information on Samuel and his Court Marshall papers. Samuel BROWNETT/NUTT Srn. was a partner of Charlotte PUGH. I also belong to a small group called Edward PUGH and Hannah SMITH Association. They were First Fleet convicts, also Charlotte's parents. I am the official recorder of details for their family tree. I was gathering the Court Marshall papers to be able to prove which Samuel BROWNETT/NUTT was our Samuel. We would be interested in you or your friend looking at our web-site and maybe even joining our group or contributing to our tree. Our site is ffps.org.au Hope this helps or answers your question. Hi Wendy,
Thank you for the reply and invitation to your group. I have the information on Charlotte Pugh and her parents, and siblings. Have you been able to find the correct death date for Samuel Brownett snr. and Charlotte Pugh.
Robyn.

Hi Robyn, our group is still working on both deaths. A member has made a suggestion re Samuel, but we are still unsure if it is correct. We only vote on things we feel have been proven with more than 2 source documents. Charlotte is still very elusive. Talk she may have gone to NZ with the Guards, or to SA with her son William (Garside) or even followed her older brother Simon to Tas. No one in our group has come forward yet with a possible scenario. Join us and put your suggestions or thoughts forward. We are always looking for new members and new eyes.

Forgot to ask Robyn, are you and the family descendant in Australia?
-
Hi Wendy,
My friend is the g.g.granddaughter of Samuel Brownett b.1788 London. Her mother was Ethel Margaret Brownett who married John Lewis Adam.
We both live in Heathcote NSW. I am not related. My First Fleet Ancestors were James Bloodworth & Sarah Bellamy.
I sent a message to your group this afternoon.
Robyn.

Hi Robyn
That's great. We do have the family listed in my data base. One of our members, Heather would be her 2nd cousin. This Saturday 14th February, we are holding our meeting at Pugh's Lagoon, Richmond. It is our picnic day. We hold the meeting at 11am and then have lunch and a chat. We are not a big group, but a friendly group. Come along if you can.

Hi Wendy,
Thank you for the invitation for Saturday, but I'm unable to come.
So far I haven't heard from your secretary to the email I sent. I am quite willing to send money to join or receive the information about Samuel Brownett's Military Records. Just need to know where to send the cheque.
Regards Robyn.

Hi Robyn, our group gather and discuss the various ancestors. Our main aim is to ensure correct information. The documents regarding the Court Marshall were obtained and paid for by members in the Brownette line. They are not held by our group as such. We have a member, who has been in touch with your friend. Our Secretary has been very busy at present, but I will let her know of your interest. We only have full members, who are direct descendants, associate members who are spouses etc of a full member, and then we have those members who have a connection or interest in our ancestors, but a not a direct descendant. Your friend can join as a full member. You can only join as a friend/associate member. Hope this makes sense.
