Title: John Cross
Post by: Gayla on Thursday 09 December 10 17:42 GMT (UK)
Can anyone help me? I am trying to get information on John Cross born about 1838 in Nottingham. Might have been Basford?  He married  Mary born approx. 1838 from North Shields Northumberland. They had 9 children including Embleton Cross born 1874 Durham, South Shields.  Have become a bit stuck.  So would be grateful to hear from anyone with information.

According to a tree on Ancestry one of John and Marys daughters had the middle name of Goymer.
The marriage below would fit in with this as its Marys maiden name
John Cross to Mary Goymer Qtr Sept 1864 Newcastle upon Tyne vol 10b page 117

Thank you Welsh Lady.  I had noticed about the name Goymer, but couldn't find a connection, then started to get a bit bogged down, going over the same things again and again.

Hi

There are about 6 John Cross's born in Nottingham around that time on the Notts FHS CD.  Do you have his death/ burial age so we can narrow it down?

Hi Sunflower,
That was my problem,  I know he was still alive in the 1881 census living in Battersea Park Road, London.  I have found a death registered for a John Cross in Jan - March 1901 in Fulham aged 64 it could possibly be him.  I know the 1881 census is the right family as their son is called Embleton and he would have been my great grandfather.  in 1871 they were living in the civil parish of Westoe Durham, by trade he was apparently a confectioner.  That really is all I have.  Not really a great deal of help!

Hi Gayla

I think you need to order John & Mary's marriage certificate to be sure who his father was.

Hi Gayla,
My GGGGrandfather was William Cross born 1833 in Basford to John and Mary. They had a son called John born 1837 but on the NFHS disc he was registered in Sneinton. There don't appear to be any other John Cross's baptised in Basford around 1838-does it say on the census he was born in Basford?

Hi Burto

No it doesn't just Nottingham.  I  have sent away for his marriage certificate, so that I can find hopefully his parents, then I can  progress from there.  Have not received it yet, so probably will be after Christmas before going any further.  I originally thought Basford seemed most likely, but then found there were several who could be him.   Thanks to Welsh Lady who found place date and vol. no. and page of marriage, I was able to order a marriage certificate. So I am going to have to wait till it arrives.  Thanks

Hi everyone who hepled with John Cross.  Have now received marriage certificate.  Not really very helpful :-[ Have found He married on 22 Sept 1864, under age it just has 'full'. He was a Druggist and confectioner, and under residence it just has 'this parish' (which was St. John's Newcastle on Tyne). The only bit of information is his father was (suprise, surprise!) John Cross, by profession a hosier. There is no help with the witnesses (have tried to find them, but doesn't seem any connection).

I have found a family on the 1851 census father John born in Beeson/buson? Nottingham profession silk glove maker and the females in the family, cotton stocking stitchers, (I wondered about a connection to father John above as a hosier?)but my John would appear  to have been born in Alfreton Derby.  Which goes against later census that say nottingham.

Anyone who can suggest any further  help would be much appreciated.
Gail

Thank you Sunflower :)

That certainly looks more promising.  Will try to find some census records for this family.  I did look before but could only find the family I mentioned before with father and son called John.  Might try to find vol. no. and page to send of for birth certificate.  Thank you once again.   Gail :)

Hello again ,

Found the above John Cross and now have birth certificate thank you everyone.   Now I need information if possible about the father. John Cross (surprise, surprise!)  He was born I think Beeston 1800/1801 Married Mary Thornton 6th Nov 1824  and died on 5th Feb 1863 in the Radford district.   If anyone has any information on the parish records about parents etc or anything else I would be grateful. I have found him on 1841 census they lived in Clement Place, Snenton and have found a will. In 1863 they lived in Holly Gardens Thorneywood Lane in Snenton .  Any help would be greatly appreciated  Gayla

Hi I live in Nottingham so just to let you know the closeness of some of the places you have mentioned.
Sneinton is just down the road from Gedling they are next to each other. Beeston is across town so work was around the Sneinton area as it is just out of the centre of the city. I noticed in the 1851 census John was the employer of 11 other people making gloves so he was doing well for those days.
You also mentioned Basford. This was a registration place for a large area of Nottingham and even today has a register office for marriages. I also saw on my search a John Cross born in Basford. He also married a Mary but I suppose that wasnt unusual in those days.

I also looked for Mary Thornton and this could be her
Mary Sarah Thornton born 14th April 1803 c at Parliament Street, formely
Hockley Church parents are George and Ann
Even today if you walk to the bottom of Parliament street you are in Sneinton.

Hope this helps and good luck on your search
regards
Sandymc

Thank you both :)

Wonderful lot of information.  It gets very difficult when you live far away from the area of your research, once you have exhausted the census. This is really helpful.   Thank you Gayla

Just reading replies to Gayla about her 'John Cross' and wondering if there is a family connection with mine. By his death certificate it showed him born 1794 but I wonder now if he may be the son of James and Sarah birth 23/08/1795. His daughter was born in Barkestone and I think he was married in Nottingham, not being sure of distances I'm not sure if these areas are close. :D sivam01
