Just posting out of curiosity really. After reading the Emma Ord post further down the page, and finding out that Ord is a fairly common name around Durham, I was wondering if it was related in any way to the surname Awde that I have come across in my own research. There are not too many of them around and they all lived in the North East.
I would be really interested to hear if anyone has come across any Awdes in their trees.
Thanks

According to "The Oxford Names Companion" Ord is either a habitation name from a place in Northumberland, or from various minor places in Scotland from the Gaelic ord=hammer used as a name for a rounded hill. Aude (Scottish) is a variation of Old, used to distinguish an older from a younger bearer of the same given name, other variations are Ould, Auld, Ault.

Aude appears to be a local variation of Awde. There were only 12 Aude in the 1881 census, and 38 Awde.

Judging by the geography of the surname it is probably of Norse influence. There was a famous Queen of Viking Dublin, Aud the deep minded, who as a widow was one of the pioneers of the Icelandic settlement. It wasn't unusual to find a woman's name as a surname where a father had died early in a child's life.

Thanks for the replies, especially the map which was very interesting to see them all in the same sort of area. I have come across Audes that are definitely a misspelling of Awde on the censuses, but it seems that Ord has a different origin altogether.

Researching my husband's family history I have found the Awde/Aude/Aud name. I'm back to about 1600 when I have them in Cockfield, Co Durham, I've also found the family in various locations through the centuries including Staindrop, Co Durham, Startforth in North Riding of Yorkshire, Dufton, in Westmorland, areas of Cumberland and Tanfield area of Co Durham. As for spelling I have found all variations of the name written in parish registers for siblings in one family especially in early parish records. Good luck with your research.:)
