Title: Leggett / Leggit family in Wexford
Post by: Wendolene on Wednesday 08 December 10 11:32 GMT (UK)
Hi all, I am looking for the marriage of John and Jane Leggett around about 1830.  They had a daughter Jane who was christened on 4 July 1852 in  the Church of Ireland, Parish of Kiltennell, the surname is recorded as Leggit in that document but it is assumed to be the right family. He is recorded as being a Land Steward of Ballycomclone when Jane was christened. He was also recorded as being a Land Steward when his daughter Jane was married in Castleknock on 16 July 1875. Any help much appreciated.

Thanks Elizabeth. I realise now that I put the likely date (1830) of John and Jane Leggetts marriage much too early as they would have been married for 22 years before they had Jane and also a daughter Anne a year or so later in 1853! I think I should have said about 1850. There were at least two families with a John Legget as father, one was born around 1820 and died in 1875, he is not the one I am looking for - wrong occupation etc.. There were also at least two Thomas Leggetts in the area, the one you mention and another who is listed in the 1901 census as being born in Co. Wexford about 1854, could he be a brother of Janes?  One of the witnesses to Jane Leggets marriage in Castleknock in 1875 was a Thomas Leggett.

I have been searching for John Leggett for a very long time.  My only information was that he was a Land Steward, Church of Ireland and probably born in Wexford.  I think it is likely that he is the same person that you are researching.
His son Robert, my great grandfather, was born in 1858 or 1859. He died in Dublin in 1889.  His first child was Margaret Jane, and second child was John.
If you can tell me more I would be very grateful.

Hello Sandra, Do you have any further details DOB etc. of your John Leggett? It could possibly be the same John that we are trying to find more about although some dates don't match.

His daughter Jane Leggett was christened on 4 July 1852 and had at least two siblings Robert who was recorded as being christened on 17 August 1852 and Ann christened on 17 August 1853. There is an obvious conflict between the 'christening' dates of Robert and Jane.  It seems certain that this Robert was born before Jane, Ann was probably also born before Jane as Robert and Anns christening records state that they were 'Received into the Church of Ireland' on the dates recorded in the christening registers, which implies they were christened before in a different church.

The records for all three state that they are the children of John Leggit, a steward who was residing at Ballycomclone and Jane his wife. Unfortunately the maiden name of Jane is not recorded.

One of the witnesses to daughter Jane Leggetts marriage in 1875 was a Thomas Leggett so possibly he is also a sibling of Jane.

Hello Wendolene
Unfortunately I don't have any dates for John Leggett.
Robert's marriage certificates both record his age as 'full'
First to Margaret Forston in 1880  (his father - John, steward)
Second to Jane McLean in 1885 (his father - John, servant)
Both Church of Ireland ceremonies in Dublin. The family story was that he was born in Wexford.
His first child was Margaret Jane and the second was John and the third Robert.
Robert's death certificate in 1889 records him as 30 BUT it was registered by another patient so it may not be accurate.  Or could it have been wrongly transcribed from the parish registers ?

I have often heard my aunt & uncle talk about a Sam Leggett and he (and his family) lived in Coolafancy, Co. Wicklow. But this is literally on the border with Wexford so it could be ...

Here are a couple of links from the 1901 and 1911 census with them:
