Title: Rachel Despeira Massiah and Robert Laurie
Post by: suzilad on Tuesday 07 December 10 14:46 GMT (UK)
This couple are my husbands ggg grandparents . They were married in 1817 in St. Stephens Coleman Street London.
In 1818 their first child was born in Leith Edinburgh and by 1841 census Rachel is still living there with her children . Her last child was born in 1832 so I presume Robert died between 1832 and 1841.
On the 1841 census it states she is of independent means .
She died in 1862 in Leith it states on her death cert. she is the widow of Robert who is a W.S. and that her father was Isaac Desperia Massiah a sugar plantation owner and she was born in Barbados.
Trying to find more information on Robert and her.

Although not directly in-line with your request for information on Rachel and Robert, there is a Will available for Jacob Massiah a Merchant in London dtd 3 Feb 1741 - proved 1754 in which he refers to (amongst others) his nephew David Massiah son of his late brother Jeremiah Massiah late of the Islands of Barbados. Also Mordorai Massiah of the Island of Barbados, Joshua Massiah of London and  his Honourable father David Massiah. No mention of an Isaac ( perhaps a little early)  but this may (hopefully) prove useful in your research for Rachel.

Kind Regards

Add -- Having looked at Jacob's Will a little more, he initially left his money to the Synagogue and to the Jewish poor of the area. So I googled Isaac and Barbados and came across a ' Reform Judaism  Magazine - Miracle in Barbados' which has the monumental inscription of Rabbi Benjamin Massiah who died in March 1782, it also refers to a book of Monumental Inscriptions for Bridgetown, Barbados, which if available now, may be of interest to you.  Try 'reformjudaismmag.org'

Hello,

Interesting to read what you have commented on.   I am also in touch with Judith (vaguely) in Canada and Ann in Scotland over the Massiah's.

I was interested to know how you sourced the Will of Jacob.......as I paid someone in Barbados to try and turn up info on the Massiah's .    Anything you can help me with would be much appreciated.  it is the Strand of Benjamin's family that I am interested in , several ancestors relating to 4x removed G.Grandparents.   Those words on the Memorial stone of Benjamin Massiah were quite lovely I agree thank you

Hello again,

I would be really grateful if you could clarify something .  You mention Jacob's father as a 'David" and also his brother Jeremiah's son as 'David'.

The lady I paid for my sources has transcribed Daniel in place of this.   Would you be able to verify at all which one it is.

Thank you again

Claire
