Title: Grafton Street Shooting - 24 June 1921
Post by: corisande on Tuesday 07 December 10 12:30 GMT (UK)
I am trying to get information about the shooting of 2 Auxiliaries in Grafton Street on 24 Jun 1921. I guess shootings were so common by then that they did not make the same news impact as earlier, and I am having difficulty getting much on this shooting

My page, such that it is,   is on this link  (http://www.cairogang.com/other-people/british/castle-intelligence/incidents/grafton%20St/grafton-st.html)

All I know is

1. Two auxiliaries were shot, Appleford and Warnes

2. I think they were shot by 4 men including Paddy O'Connor - I have seen his Witness Statement referred to, but have not read it. It was apparently a 2nd battalion operation.

3.They were coming out of an unnamed cafe in Grafton Street. A newspaper report mention a "woman in blue" being involved

4. It was said to be " part of a larger IRA operation" and I have no idea what this refers to.

Any further information appreciated.

Hi there,

I recently received a copy of my grandfathers papers.  His name was William Roe and died in 1976. He was in Na Fianna in Boland's Mill in 1916. And was heavily involved in operations in the south inner city in the War of Independence and the Civil War. I have not found anything in his papers on this operation. The was once a jewish jeweller shot on Grafton St.  He was shot by undercover army men (freestate) in the 20s and was mistaken for my grandfather.

Has William Roe's name cropped up in any of your other research on south inner city activity?

Hi

Afraid I have not come across him with regards to this topic of mine. There must have been years been the shootings and all they have in common is Grafton Street

I would advise you to start another thread on your grandfather. That way it is easier for readers to follow each thread.

William Roe was my distant relative, Robert Bonfield's immediate superior during the Civil War. I have lots of information on Bonfield and Tommy O'Leary who also would have reported to Roe please get in touch, I would be more than happy to share - mckennam [at] gmaildotcom
