In my wife's tree I have several Stockdales mostly 18th and a few 19th century. Problem is they are all near Retford, Notts. so any connection is likely to be a long way back unless one of yours migrated there or one of my wife's migrated to Cumbria in the 18th century.

Yes it does seem to be far away, but anything is possible because we all know how people moved around the country in those days, any way, thanks for the reply, and have a nicer day                    Larry.t

Hi larry.t

Don't know if it's the same line but my gr. gr grandfather was Joseph Stockdale, a schoolmaster from Whitehaven. He was born1798 in Branthwaite, Cumberland to Thomas and Sarah (nee Craggle) Stockdale.

Joseph marr Hannah Dixon 1826 and their daughter, Margaret Ann Stockdale marr Daniel Hanvey 1867.  Their son Septimus (aka John)w was my grandfather. All Whitehaven.

Amongst my wife's ancestors there is a Joseph Stockdale who was born in 1798, again in Markham Notts. There is nothing known to me about this line prior to the mid 1740s in the Markham/Tuxford area of Notts, so I wonder were they incomers at this time, and if so from where? The earliest Stockdales I have were George and his wife Elisabeth who were having children in the Markham area in the 1740s.Where did they come from?

Hi Larry, sorry for the delay.

My ggg grandfather Robert Stockdale is buried in Bridekirk. I have photos of the memorials and I think the dates for him are 1791 - 1861. His mother Mary's dates are 1763 - 1846 and his father, also Robert, died in 1822. I have struggled to find more but seem to remember one of these Mary's was a Wharton based on the work my father did over 10 years ago. I am starting from scratch as his records are lost. Any help would be great. Phil
