This is suppose to be where my ancestors lived until they came to America. I was hoping someone could tell me about my ancestors home.
Who lives there if they are Edwards, Where I could write to see if they would have old picture of this area and maybe if they have old Edwards pictures.
Thomas Edwards, Jr. born 1723, son of Thomas Nathaniel Edwards, Sr. born 1690 and Elizabeth Isabel Downing, married Elizabeth Nichols October 23, 1743 and they moved to Groesffordd, Isgeifiog Parish, Flintshire, North Wales were Robert was born in 1743.
Others born there:
Robert's son, Owen Edwards born July 13, 1816
Owen's son, Edward Owen Edwards born December 18, 1838
Edward came to America and I don't have any more information of my Edwards living in Wales.

Hi there,
Is the name Groesffordd a house name or the name of an area etc?.
Literally translated from the Welsh it means crossroads----groes/croes =cross;ffordd=road.
If you Google the name Ysceifiog you will find loads of info on the area, some of it obviously of no use to you at all but there will be plenty about the area itself which may be of interest to you.
You can also try the following site if you haven't already done so:
www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/FLN/Ysceifiog (http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/wal/FLN/Ysceifiog)
I hope this is of some use to you.Good luck in your research.

Thanks for your information.
I had a cousin who was visiting there take a picture of the house. I was told it was at a crossroad and it was the name of the house.
There was a sign with Groesffordd on the gate.
I have notice Ysceifiog and Isgeifiog are spelled alot alike, Do you think the parish is Ysceifiog unstead of Isgeifiog?
Thanks again.
-
Trust me---Ysceifiog and Isgeifiog are the same. The spellings are different probably due to a certain amount of the name being Anglicised--Y to I and mis-mutation of the Welsh language(don't ask)--C to G.
-
Thank you. I will make a note on my family tree. This could be why I didn't find Isgeifiog Parish.
-
hello, groesfford is used quite a lot in wales,as,mentioned beford it means cross roads,do you have any other information about your particular groesfordd?
i live very near to an old house called groesffordd, and it would be classed as in the ysceifog parish.julie
-
I only have a picture of it that was taken by another Edwards. I wish I could tell you more.
-
Can you post a scan of the photo? You never know, there may be someone here to recognises it.
We've had a couple of similar threads on just that subject on Rootschat, which also turned up a lot more other information as well.

This is a picture of the house and the other picture is suppose to be the road to get there. Rod Davis (orginal banjo player for the beatles took these pictures, He is related to a Mary Edwards buried in a church yard near the home.
-
hello, that is not the groesfford that is near me.the one near me is a house not a farm, but it is very old,and could be classed as ysceifiog,as the footpath behind my cottage is "in the parish of ysceifiog".julie
-
The only information I have for where the house is located is my cousin Tom Edwards visited over there and he said he was on A541 turn to Ysceifiog.
-
Hi Wondered if you still keep in touch with this site as the thread is quite old. I have the name Downing used as a middle name & also as part of a double barrelled surname, Downing-Jones in my family tree & thought that there may be a connection to your Downings as they were in the same area?
-
I haven't done much research on this line, however, other cousins information has Elizabeth Isabel Downing father as George Downing connected to 10 Downing Street.
-
I always knew I would be famous for something!!!! Seriously, I'll have to do more research on why the name was used so much. I'll post anyhting I find out. Regards Mo

Here are a few website sites about the Downings that I'm related too. Like I said I haven't done any research on this line, just what was sent to me by other cousins. I mostly work on the Edwards line.
