Thank you one and all :)
It would appear That George Cancick adopted or looked after some or all of the Freek family at some stage.
perhaps through illness or hard times.
Anyway it seems that Wilmelmina took the cancick surname for when she got married.
once again thank you

Another two names just to add to the confusion. Kenneth Hutchinson Freak Cancick bap. 25 SEP 1857, Stanhope. Son of George and Ann Cancick.
Mary Frances F. Cancick married Lanchester Reg. Dist. DEC 1894.

Thanks for these extra details. It adds another twist to the story. Perhaps the Freeks and the Cancicks were related in a previous generation via marriage or adoption.
perhaps the detective types can find a link.
thanks again

Hi Georgina
There is a personal message facility whereby you can send a message directly to maureens man (you may have information that you don't want to post in public for instance).
Look in the help section at the top of the screen, click on Personal Messages and that will explain how it works.
You need to have made at least 3 posts before you can use it, you have already made 2 so just send a reply to this one and the PM facility will be ready for you to use.

Hi Georgina2
Like you i am not sure about posting on this web site so If this message comes to you and not on the forum them we are reasonably secure from unwanted email attention.
I know that Wilhelmina married my relation John Appleton Turnbull
They had A son William Appleton Turnbull in 1900 but he died within months.
So far as i can tell they had a daughter Margaret Eva Turnbull in 1906.
I would like to know if they had any other children and/or grand children.
Do you have info as to where they lived and what John Appleton Turnbull did as the years went bye
Also where did Wilhelminas father come from and what was is profession.
Any information that you have would be greatly appreciated.
If i can supply you with any do please ask.
Best Regards

I've attached a couple of PDFs for Cancick/Cansick and Freek/Freick burials at Blackhill cemetery which may be useful.

I replied to this yesterday but I see it has not shown up. So to clear up your mystery:
William Freek was William Freek Cancick - family name. Some members of the family appear to have dropped the Cancick part - however my mother was christened Margaret Freek Cancick although always known as Freek. Freek appears to have been a first name or middle name so their surname was actually Cancick.
Research shows they were probably originally from Solingen in Germany and propably swordmakers. Due to religious persecution in their own country they went to Shotley Bridge a remote location and renowned for swordmaking.
Wilhelmina was the sister of my grandfather Joseph Michael Freek Cancick. I list the whole family below:
William Freek (1838-1921) General Dealer, Stanhope married Jane Ann Waggot (1840) and resided at 14 Eltringham Street Blackhill
were the parents of:
John James (1861) Ann J (1865) George W (1868) Mary Fanny (1870) Edith A (1872) Wilhelmina M (1874) in my research I found she had married a Hubert Doughty? Emily J (1876) Gertrude L (1877) and my Grandfather Joseph M (1880)
I have an old photo of the family but don't know how I can send it to you maybe able to do this at some stage.
Hope this info helps with your mystery

Another couple of PDFs attached which may help clarify, (or perhaps muddy), the waters.
The first shows two separate headstone inscriptions for Freek and Cancick from the South cemetery at Blackhill; these simply confirm some of the information in the Burial Records attached in my previous post. There are no other headstones with these names in the South cemetery.
The second shows the result of a search in the Burial Records for the use of Freek or Cancick as a forename - or double barreled surname. This is quite often an indication of a family relationship. Cancick did not show up but Freek can be seen in record nos. 7910, 8746, 9547 and 10461 in association with the surnames HOBDAY and WHINNEY. Does this help, or does it just confuse matters further? ???

Thanks PB3 for the cemetary records. Very interesting and has helped a lot. Also much appreciated that you did this. Some where along the line they are all related due to the fact there were many children. Their name was indeed Freek Cancick, Freek originally being a first or middle name. However in those days it would appear that many families named their children the same so then it gets confusing as to who was who.
Hobday and Whinney are relations - my mother had cousins so named.
Thank you again - Georgina2:)
