Title: where to find a mariner at census time

If I know that a person is a mariner and he isn't in a census with his wife , where would I look for the info on his wherabouts during census time ( 1861 ) ? or were they not enumerated if off on a ship ?

I believe that if the ship was in a UK port, then it was enumerated. My great grandfather was on board a ship in 1881 and I have that record. But I presume that if the ship was at sea or in port overseas, then there will be no record.

Am I right? someone will know the definite answer to this....

Royal naval ships abroad were included in the census. A relative is included in the 1861 census who was stationed aboard a British warship off Bermuda when the census was taken.I think merchant ships were only included if they were in a British port on census night.

That sounds right Roger. Mine was a Merchant Sailor and in port.

The only way to find a seaman at that time is crew lists which will be a long tedious job.

70% of records are held in Newfoundland. I have read that they have published searchable CDs, so you may find someone with a copy on a specialised site such as http://merseygenforum.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=mariners

Or you can try - http://www.findmypast.co.uk/clip-crew-lists-search-start.action - FindMyPast use the database produce by the CLIP project - http://www.crewlist.org.uk/index.html

If you find details of a man it will give you his previous ship, so you can then search using the ship's official number, until you find 'first ship' or there is a transcription error.

If you think he may have served in 1857 or earlier his details should be on microfilm in Kew.
