Title: Macgerty/McGerty barrow/dalton in furness c.1900
Post by: mcflirtybabe on Friday 03 December 10 11:13 GMT (UK)
Hello,

Looking for help in tracing a Cornelius Macgerty aka Con Macgerty (could be spelt McGerty too!)

Born 1878/79, in Ballyconnell Co Cavan

Left Co Cavan, Ireland aged about 19 circa 1899/1900.

Married an Eliza/ Elizabeth Johnstone in Ca Cavan Ireland shortly before the emigrated to Lacashire.

Apparently had lots of children, possibly one called Cornelius too?

New leads on him being in the Barrow/Dalton in furness area working as a shipbuilder?

Anyone able to help?

He is hopefully my dear old 80 year old Dad's long lost Uncle! My Gt Grandad (his brother) never heard from him again and we'd love to know what happened to him, and his family.

Any information or clues gratefuly apreciated: births, deaths marriages etc...

Thank you for reading this .

Best wishes, Lilli McGerty

This is the only possible match I can see:

1901

RG13/4007/106/23 - 4 Crooklands Brow, Dalton in Furness
Peter McALOONE - Head - 23 - Shipyard Labourer - Ireland
Mary McALOONE - Wife - 22 - Ireland
Kate McALOONE - Dau - 1 - Ireland
Ellen McALOONE - Mother - 60 - Ireland
John CLARK - Boarder - 18 - Shipyard Labourer - Barrow in Furness
Cornelius MAGERTY - Boarder - 23 - Shipyard Labourer - Ireland
Eliza MAGERTY - Boarder - 19 - Ireland
Patrick MAGERTY - Boarder - 1 - Barrow in Furness

There are several BMD records for MAGERTY in Barrow district which probably relate to this family, including birth records for children with the mother's maiden name given as McALONE.  (That doesn't match with a JOHNSTONE marriage, though.)   These are on Free BMD http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

We can't do 1911 lookups because of copyright issues, but you can search the free index at http://fmpbsol.1911census.co.uk/ and pay for credits if you want to see the full details.

Sadly, it looks as though Cornelius and Elizabeth died young:

Deaths Jun 1922
MAGERTY    Cornelius    40
Barrow F. 8e 1006

Deaths Mar 1923
MAGERTY    Elizabeth    40
Barrow F. 8e 1045

Hi,

You may also want to search the births on www.cumbriabmd.org.uk .  You will have to use the soundex though and trawl through as there are various spellings for them.  There is a Cornelius Magerty  in 1902 with mmn McAloone too.

Mo

Hi,

My name is Dave McGerty (aged 64) I am the son of John Gerald McGerty (deceased) and I believe that my Dad was the son of Cornelius and Elizabeth. I know that my Dad was one of (I think) 12 or 13 children, most of whom died along with their parents in a T.B. epidemic in the early 1920's. My father survived and died in 1964 in a Road Traffic Accident aged 56. I remember his sister Dorothy, and a surviving brother (can't recall his name.)
I have two brothers and 2 sisters, all older than me. I was only 17 when my father died, and although he didn't talk about his family much, I am fairly sure his Fathers name was Cornelius. I think the family name was spelt Magerty when my Father was a child.

Hope this helps, and I can be contacted at, (*)

Best Wishes,
Dave McGerty
