Hi Jamison,
There is a David KEDDIE arriving Vic aboard the NEGOTIATOR 3 Jun 1857. He was aged 30. There look to be several KEDDIE's aboard. On the same page (Book 11a page 56) as David I note Thomas 22 and Robert 20.
Other family may have been aboard with these boys listed with other single males. (The boys may or may not be connected)
http://www.prov.vic.gov.au/indexes/index_search.asp?searchid=24
Cheers Kris :)

Looking at 1851 census in Creich Fife we have a family who may fit these boys (you would need original) a John HEDDIE[sic] Janet RITCHIE along with Thomas KEDDIE 15, Robert KEDDIE 13 and Christine KEDDIE 6 and a couple of other children with different surnames
I note on an ancestral file ( so submitted lists David as the child of this John and Janet married 3 Feb 1822 in
Dairsie) This file lists a second marriage 1 Dec 1854 to Margaret HERD which fits with names of passengers aboard the NEGOTIATOR
Some baptisms listed to this couple in Forgan, Kilmany, Creich
https://beta.familysearch.org/#form=advanced-records
Cheers Kris :)
-
I do not see a baptism listed to this couple for David. (though others from passenger list are there)
There appears to be a Vic death (age out but other details agree with Ceres baptism posted by Sid earlier)
If this is him it looks like the others aboard that ship were not his immediate family.
Death in 1882 Beranyon Vic #4515 lists David KEDDIE aged 49 parents Thomas KEDDIE and Christina BROWN
Cheers Kris :)

The mother of Margaret and Daniel is a Janet Mc Intosh
But can`t find her on the IGI for 1803 Edinborough
May be here mother was called a Watson as for Daniel`s middle name.
Wilson for Margaret`s as she was named after her paternal grandmother.

Hi Jamison
James William Birch was the youngest son of Joseph Edward Birch and Jessie Christina Keddie and was lost on 'HMAS Sydney' in 1941.
The older children were Margaret May born 8 June 1906, married to Len Smethurst, Jessie Elizabeth born 14 July 1908 married to John Lightfoot, Florence Martha born 25 September 1910 married to Eric Thorne, Joseph Keddie born 1912 married to Laura Barnes, Nellie Christina born 1914 married to Jack Glossop.
Margaret Wilson Taylor (nee Couper) was a widow when she married David Keddie on 21 June 1879 but he died on 5 May 1882 when Jessie was only 14 months old.
This David Keddie named his parents as Thomas Keddie and Christina Brown and Margaret's parents were William Couper and Janet de Tuloch on the marriage certificate (#331) at which time he was 45. The death certificate (#56 - 4574) says he was 49 then and had been in Victoria for 25 years. So his birth year was 1833 and his immigration date would have been around 1857? I'm still searching!

Hi to all on this search.
All of you are trying to piece together David Keddie, who travelled to Australia on board the "Negotiator" in 1857, and his family and ancestors etc.
His parents were Thomas Keddie and Christina Brown, married in 1822. David was born on 16th April 1825 in Ceres, Fife. He travelled to Australia with his uncle, John Keddie (born 1800) and John's second wife Margaret Herd and the 5 youngest of John's children from his first marriage to Janet Ritchie. John and Janet had 10 children in all.
When David went to Australia he left behind in Fife a son John (born 1854) he had to Mary Paton (they were never married). Its a long story. John was brought up by Thomas Keddie, his grandfather, and his second wife Elizabeth Kirk. (Mary Paton died in 1859).
Young John later married Elizabeth Angus in 1894. Elizabeth Angus had 3 sons prior to marrying John and they later had one daughter and 3 more boys when married. One of their boys was called David. This David was my grandfather. I was called after him.

Dear David
Wow, l would have never thought - as nothing is mentioned in Australian records of another family.
I descend from David’s daughter Jessie (my great grandmother).
That would make our grandfathers half 1st cousins.
I knew about his family coming out to Australia and that his father married an Elizabeth Kirk.
I have a picture of Thomas and Elizabeth’s head stone in Fife, Scotland.
I don’t know anything of David’s brother Robert or what happened to his mother Christina Brown !!
Cheers and thanks for getting in touch.

I have no information on Robert except his DOB as 18/11/1826 in Ceres, Fife.
Thomas Keddie's first wife Christina Brown died on 10th April 1834 at Chance Inn where they lived. Chance Inn (not an Inn) was the name of a small hamlet of houses near Ceres.
If I have my facts correct the headstone you have a photo of for Thomas Keddie and Elizabeth should show that they died within 3 days of each other. 25th Nov and 28th Nov 1879. Death record says they are age 82 and 84. It also says they died of old age.
Their address at death is given as Springfield. Its near where they lived. In Springfield at that time there was what was known as Fife and Kinross District Asylum. This may have operated as a workhouse for the poor as well. They may have ended their days there. At their age they are unlikely to have been fit for work and therefore may have had no income. I have no proof of this however. I hope the above is of some use.

Hello Dave
Thanks for getting back to me.
They were old for the time and l guess one could not live without the other.
I guess then they has no children of their own.
Just a question about the son David left behind.
Was he know as a Keddie or Paton ?
I found Christina’s date of death today while searching Scotlandspeople.
Thanks for getting in contact and a bit more of the story of the Keddies.

Thomas and Elizabeth had a son William born in 1839? They had married in 1837.
David's son John was a Keddie.
All of the Keddies in Fife were farm workers/labourers for generations. So it doesn't surprise me that David eventually becomes a farmer in Australia. It was in his genes.
In the 1850's farm mechanisation was coming in and the land owners did not need so many labourers. So in some ways getting rid of them was a problem. Supported passage to foreign lands was one solution. Hence David and his relatives end up in Astralia.
Mary would not have been allowed to go for a number of reasons. She was an unmarried mother. John was only 3 and there was a good chance that he would not have survived the journey. Mary had contracted TB in 1857 (and died from it in 1859) another reason she couldn't travel.

Thanks for the info. as it puts things in perspective about David’s parents and his situation.
Do you know who Christian’s - David’s mother - parents were, as just a matter of interest.
The Keddies are a large family to research.

I know there are a lot of Keddies. But there are a lot more Browns. Have tried to find Christina's parents but the number of Browns are just mind boggling. The most likely places to find them are possibly in St Andrews, Fife or Crail, Fife. There are family connections to those places for the Browns.
Strange thing is that Thomas Keddie's parents are James Keddie and Elspeth Brown married in St Andrews in 1788. So Christina could be a distant (hopefully) relative of Thomas mother Elspeth.
Remember in your search that sometimes Christina is recorded as Christian etc. You need to try both.
Also you won't find a birth for John Keddie. But from kirk session records I know its around October or November of 1854.
Hope thats useful.

Thanks for the reply and yes the Browns are a plentiful bunch.
I will just keep plodding along.

I was re reading our posts from March just last Sunday the 18th Aug. We were in Scotland and wondered if we could look up anything in Fife that we had missed before. I remembered that you said you had a photo of Thomas andElizabeth headstone. So searched it out on the net and found out that it was in Monimail. So on Monday 19th I was standing in front of their headstone. Your reply to our last text in March was flagged up on my laptop later the same day!!!
Turns out that the Elizabeth Kirk's family was from Monimail. I still think they ended their days in the Asylum because they are in Chance Inn in 1851 and 1861 but nowhere to be found in census from then on. Thomas is a tenant farmer at Chance Inn paying £10 rent in 1851 and £12 in 1861.
Headstone probably erected by David and Robert between 1879 and 1881 when David dies in Australia. So he must have sent money home to family in Fife.
Questions for you - was David a successful farmer in Australia able to send money home?
Also - how are your searches going? Do you live in Australia? Mr or Mrs??
Dave
-
Hello David
Ah, it must have been great to see it up close and personal.
Sorry, for not sending it to you - it was rude of me not to.
I wish to do it one day myself....to stand in front of it.
So we half-cousins a few times removed...still surprised that your branch exists. No-one spoke of another family in Scotland...your John (is your grt. Grandfather) and my Jessie (is my grt grt. Grandmother) as half-bro & sis. Happy that John stayed in the family.
As for David having money - just enough - or being a successful farmer - not on a grand scale.
Life in Australia was hard back then and success was based the size of the farm and it’s produce.
As for your questions at the end of your post - l will PM you to respond.
Cheers

Hello everyone. I have been searching forever for David. Because he came out with John and family I assumed he was John's son. No wonder I couldn't find him after coming to Australia. I am a GGG granddaughter of John Keddie who came to Australia, through his son Thomas. I have a bit of history from John's line if anyone is interested. I also have a copy of David's probate record from 1882.
