Title: GRO Query

Quick question, hopefully someone will be able to help me, How do I go about getting a GRO reference? I have a reference for my grandfather but im not sure its a GRO reference (sorry new to this) I have 6 b 1137, is that a GRO reference?

Hi Nicola
you need the registration district name as well as the letters and numbers you allready have. Freebmd.org.uk is very good at finding the information you need. Then apply for your certificate from the GRO.

To order  certificates you need to know the type ie Birth, Marriage or death, the name, year and quarter, the registration district and then the volume and page number.  So it would be Birth, Bloggs, March quarter 1840, Anytown, vol 6b page 1130
The form you fill in makes it quite clear though so you should be OK.

it takes a little while to get used to how to fill the form in for the Gro.
So before attacking the form.  

Remember to write down the ref No. something like 7a 187 and the Quarter which is the month of registration, for instance Apr.May.Jun. The year of course.  And then  if a death cert needed age at death in known. The names you have musnt be forgotten.  

This is just my check list for when I apply for certs.. I have to go through it very carefully to make sure I am doing it right..  :-[ :-X :-\

Someone else may have a better way or see something I have missed.  ;)

You could also apply to the local register office where the event took place - is it Wolverhampton?  looks like it might be.  They are very helpful and would probably be a lot quicker than the GRO.
