Hi, Just wondering if anyone cud help me as regards a house in Ladywell, a period house, up a lane opposite the water garden. It is the house on the right. It is boarded up, in disrepair. Cud anyone tell me the name of the house and the history of the house.
Thank you :)
-
Hi, I know the house you mean.I was born and raised in Thomastown. I often delivered groceries to that house as a shop boy. A family by the name of Kennedy lived there at that time. I didn't know the house was boarded up as I pass by that way once a week. As far as I am aware a daughter of that family still owns the property, but dont know her marriage name and I thought she and her husband still lived there. Maybe she built a new house. A family named Glendon lived there before Kennedy's .
There is a very large farm attached to that house. I will make some enquiries tomorrow and let you know how I get on.
Regards. jakel

Thanks jakel, i took a walk up there yesterday and it looked beautiful in the snow, awful pity its not being used, all boarded up and big window broken around the side. It was for sale last year, just wondered if they sold it or not
Thank u :)

Hi Tracy8.
Just a little more info on that house. It was sold pending planning permission being granted for a hotel last year, but permission was denied and I dont know what the situation is now. It is reported that this is the oldest house in Thomastown. Dont know how old that is though. You said you were there yesterday. Are you by any chance a decendent of a thomastown family. If so I would be interested in keeping in touch.
Regards ; jakel

U are just full of info, thanks so much for that. Im so glad it was denied planning for a hotel, just dont think it wud be fitting for the area. No i am not from thomastown, i am living in ladywell for the past 3 years, and absolutely love it here. My dog ran off on me the other day up that lane, i followed her up and there was this beautiful house! Never even knew it existed, just goes to show there is so much to discover in this beautiful town! If i won the lotto i wud buy it in a heart beat, restore it to its original beauty.
Thank u so much for the info Jakel :)

If you can locate the house on the old OSI maps it might be possible to find out it's original name and some details on the old owners (as in during the 19thC).
See Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny (http://maps.osi.ie/publicviewer/#V1,658266,641973,6)
Select the historic options on the right to see older maps. The 25" maps are from around 1890, the 6" maps from 1820 to 1840.

p.s. could it be the House named Mill view on the maps ?
-
Hi Shane,
Thanks so much for that tip, i think u might be right about the name Millview according to the map, i also found a window restorer who may have worked on the house on the Irish Georgian Society website. It is a georgian style house, and he refers to workin on a house called millview on his website : "Millview, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny- restoration of the sash windows with sections of the wood being replaced in the original windows with frames and draught proofing being included in the restoration" Maybe that is the house he is refering to. Obviously it hasnt occured yet as the windows are still boarded up
Thanks again

Hi Tracy.
The house in the photo is not Millview. It is (or was ) Kennedy's in my time. If you go up that lane that you went up and go straight in the gate facing you, that is Millview.owned by the Hoyne family. This family previously ran a bar/grocery/hardware shop where Capitol hardware now is. The late Mrs. Hoyne was a daughter of the Pilsworth family who owned the mill in mill st. The family are still engaged in a number of businesses in the town. The picture of "Kennedy's" brought back some memories. I could tell you some stories about it. ( But not here ) Both houses have quiet a bit of history attached to them. A point of interest, my grand uncle owned a forge where the coffee shop in the watergarden now stands. I think I may have revealed my identity there.

Hi Jackel, thank u for clearing that up, i know the house u speak of, i think a man who does window restoration has a work shop up there in mill view. I wud love to hear ur stories, u r so full of wisdom about the area. I find it very difficult to find any history about the house on internet so ur info is great. Anyway, i fell in luv wit it when i saw it and am drawn to it everytime i walk down ladywell now, i am slightly obsessed as is my dog who runs up there everytime! Glad the pic brought back memories for u, u may have given ur identity away but i wudnt know u im afraid. Local people will know Jackel from now on though!!

Hi again tracy.
You've really stirred up the old grey matter. Just remembered the name of that house is "Abbeyview"

Thanks Jakel, i looked up more about the history of the house. the 17th-century Abbey View House is located c. 50m to the south of the holy well at Ladywell. Nine test-trenches were opened on the proposed development site in August 2006. Topsoil depths were no greater than 0.2m. The topsoil overlaid a pale orange sandy boulder clay subsoil. This subsoil was stony on either side of the field boundary dividing Fields 1 and 2 and where trenches were located close to the southern field boundary. The topsoil removed from the trenches was spread thinly for examination. Some sherds of post-medieval glazed red earthenware and unglazed earthenware were recovered from the topsoil. Modern china and animal-bone fragments were also recovered.

Unfortunately i also discovered how much the people were looking for the house earlier this year which was 800,000 euro, really need to win the lotto now!! :o Thanks for all info jakel
-
I wonde did that price include the farm as well. Seems a lot of money just for a run down house.
jakel

Yeah was quite surprised at the price, it included the 1.2 acres with the house, said it was an exciting prospect for renovation! Thats a nice way of saying, needs alot of work! It has been taken off the market by Boyd`s so i dont know whether it was sold or not, by the looks of the picture, i doubt it.

You seem to know a huge amount about Ladywell/Thomastown. Any info on the Deegan family? Or Jim and Peg Duffy?

Hi, just saw your postings - I have a picture of this house in my album. As far as I know my Grandmother was born there in 1893. Her name was Norah Murphy. Amazing the things you find on the net when surfing.

My mother was Deegan!

Hi,
Does anyone have any knowledge of Thomas and Bridget Walsh(nee Hennessy) from Ladywell in Thomastown. My great grandmother Ellen Walsh was born in Ladywell on 4 Nov 1850. Thomas' parents names were Edward and Winifred Walsh (nee Fitzgibbon). Ellen was the 7th child out of a total of 11, the youngest 3 children all born in Melbourne, Australia. I have suspicions that Thomas may have been born in Tipperary, but I need to do more work on that part. I think that Bridget came from Callan. Can anyone assist here.

Hi Tracey8 im orginally from thomastown i know that the Hoynes family lived the for many years i think until quiet recently.
If that's the house i think it is (on the right as you drive up that lane, and has a large lawn in front of it, and overlooking the town, it's called "Abbey View") it has been vacant for a few years and the last owner was the Brennan family from Dungarvan, Co.Kilkenny (who inherited from Paddy Kennedy who owned and lived in it for a long time) and it was sold a few years ago and hasn't been lived in since!
It was put up for sale again by the new owners a couple of times but was never sold as far as i know!
Is that any help?

Hi, I am very interested in the house. I am related to James Kennedy who lived in the Thomastown vicinity in the mid 1800's. As far as I know his was the main Kennedy family in Thomastown or in Pleberstown.

Please check Reply #27 on previous page re: Kennedy residence
Also, as far as i know, Glendons were related to my ancestors (Pierts)
