I know that my uncle, John Bennett, served in the 'first world war and I thought that I had got lucky when I found that the 'Bs' had been indexed.
When I searched for 'John Bennett' I got hundreds!
I narrowed it down a bit by guessing the regiment - South Wales Borderers - but still got dozens. I picked out one possible and paid the £3 to download the info.
I got a page with medal details of six 'John Bennetts' but there is no way of identifying any of these.
I would be grateful for any suggestions.

Hi,
Sorry you have waited so long for a reply on this one. :(
Are you still stuck here?

There is a publication, made about 1920 - Roll of Honour---which gives brief histories of the names within, BUT, it does not contain everyone who served , as I understand the people mentioned, paid for their own entry.
I saw it on lin at a ' Manchester' information site. but i am sure other cities have drawn from it.

Hi! i believe you can only really narrow down your search if you have maybe a picture of him in uniform to identify a regiment maybe or a service number, even in some cases a rank can help, sorry to not be any more help.
PS. The roll of honour is for soldiers who died.

Does anyone in the family have his medals? If so his service details (Regt & No) will be inscribed on the rim.

If we are talking about the 'National Roll of Honour' then most of those listed survived. There is only partial coverage of England and none at all of the rest of the UK.

Just noticed that this enquiry seems to date back to 2004!
Anyway, one way to eliminate Bennets is to remove those recorded as war dead on the CWGC site.
