Title: St.John,Liverpool 1804 marriage PIKEMAN/SCROGGS
Post by: Mestalla on Monday 29 November 10 16:41 GMT (UK)
Hallo,  I have been given information that Michael SCROGGS married Catherine PIKEMAN in 1804, at St John's.
I am trying to find the birthplace of Catharine or her fathers name to link her with my family.
I have been searching so far with no luck and now find that the Church was pulled down in 1897.
That's not good news. Is a register likely to exist ? and what is my next step. Any help gratefully recd.Scroggs could be spelt SKROGGS.
Thanks.........Mestalla

I think the church you mean is St John Old Haymarket. their registers end in 1898. The registers are at Liverpool Record ref 283 JOH.

Before 1837 the marriage entry does not show the father's names and you will not find places of birth mentioned.

The marriage you want doesn't  appear on www.familysearch.org or their Beta site nor on www.lan-opc.org.uk. This last only has baptisms and burials on it.

If it helps at all, the marriage entry can be found on the IGI, the familysearch Beta and Pilot sites.  The names are transcribed as Cath. Pickerman & Miche Seroggs who were married at St John's Church Liverpool on 2nd September 1804.

It would help enormously to have the information contained in the actual Parish Record, including witnesses' names.

Thank you for any help you are able to give.

Anne

Apart from the witnesses names - there will not be any other other really useful information.  Marriage entries for that period were very sparse

Names
Full age or minor
Widow(er) or bachelor/spinster
OTP - of this parish - but that does not always mean they originated from Liverpool - just that they satisfied the 3 weeks legal residential requirement to marry there
Witnesses names

Sorry I was looking for the marriage under the spellings you gave and that was why I found nothing.

I never thought of Pickman for Pikeman!

Hallo,   Thanks for all your answers but if the register doesnt show place of birth for Catharine or her fathers name, then looking at it wont help much, although a family witness of hers could be a long shot. I am searching for the birth of Alexander Pikeman c1770. The only record remotely near that date is in the Isle of Man. Alexander married Clarinda Scroggs and he  had a sister Catharine.
Now we see a Catharine marrying a Scroggs, very tempting to draw a conclusion but it could be one of life's coincidences. Thanks again,    Mestalla

Hallo Garstonite,   Yes you are right there are only 6 Alexander Pikeman s in the IGI
1 is about the right date, 4 come well after and 1 50 odd years before. Frances of I.of Man. can find no proof as the Pikeman name seems to have disappeared there. Neither can I find his death
in about 16 church gravestones I have searched through. The five other Pikeman originate in
Montrose .Angus. I have posted a query there but have received no reply.
Thanks,  Mestalla
