I need to find out more information regarding an inmate who was there in 1864. My ancestor, Mary Goacher had a son George Goacher in the workhouse but she refused to put any info on the birth certificate apart from her name. Would the workhouse records have her father's name or even where she came from?
Goacher is a very unusual name in Shropshire but not over here in Leicestershire. I think there must be a link as Gorge ended up living over here.
I cannot get back any further than Mary, who later married Thomas Hughes and lived in Horsehay.
It a long way to go to find nothing.... any advice??
cheers

Hi
Do you have a copy of her marriage cert to Thomas Hughes as that should have her fathers name (unless she was also illegitimate)
What about the 1871/1881 censuses - they will show her birthyear and birthplace

Hi Carol
Unfortunately Mary did not include her father's name even on the marriage certificate and on the 1871 census it only has Derby as her birthplace.
By 1881, Mary had died.
This is why I am wondering if it would be recorded on the workhouse records. Hopefully someone who has used the resource could inform me that such data is usually recorded. If it is then it would be worth my while going to Shropshire Records

Hello
This is unrelated to your question, but, I am trying to trace the surviving family of a Mary Goacher, all I know is that in 1923 she was working in Moira Pottery. Just wondered whether you may be able to help, I noticed your Leicester reference. Thanks.

Hi,
There are still a great many Goachers living in Measham/Moira area. I'm hoping that my Mary is linked to these families. If you give me a few more details of the Mary Goacher you are looking for I can see what I can find out around the village.

Hi
Sadly I don't have any more details, and I am not related. My friend dug up an old pottery jam jar and on it is hand inscribed:
from Mary Goacher to Mrs Arnold 6 Old Park Villas Ashby-de-la-z good luck Moira Pottery Limited 25.7.23. It also has a horseshoe picture.
I suspect Mrs Arnold may have been leaving to have a baby or something. It has been in my cupboard for about 16 years and I just thought it would be nice to return it to any existing relatives who may value the sentiment.
I have had a brief search of the census from 1911 and there are eight possibilities, but one family in particular stand out (as they registered in Moira), the Mother was born in 1865 and the daughter 1892.

Of the 8 I found in Ashby the birth years were 1895, 1902, 1878, 1907, 1865, 1875, 1892 and 1905. My guess is that it is one of the younger Marys, but equally it could be none of them. I think Moira pottery was founded in 1922 so future Census information may not help.

Have you thought of searching both names on 'Genes Reunited' maybe someone has already looked into this? I started to have a look but stopped myself, you know how addictive puzzles can be :) I hope it's not a 'dead end' to your research, it sounds like you have little to go on.
