Title: Hayes electoral register lookup please
Post by: Chrislats on Monday 29 November 10 13:43 GMT (UK)
Hi

I'm trying to find out if William Joseph Adams lived at 10 the Green, Woodend, Hayes between 1930 and 1952 and who lived there with him.

Would anyone be able to look this up for me or suggest how I could search online?

Thanks a lot

Hi

Information on searching electoral registers which even with an address can be a bit time consuming to search

http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/findhelprestype/offpubs/electreg/electoralregisters.pdf

There were no electoral registers produced 1940-1944. Only those 21 or over who had registered to vote would appear in the registers for the dates you specify.

Hillingdon Heritage Service (London Borough of Hillingdon) covers Hayes

http://www.hillingdon.gov.uk/index.jsp?articleid=9556

They are likely to have electoral registers for their area. Otherwise the British Library hold electoral registers (but I think in the process of moving them, so they are unavailable until January).

Hi

Thanks for the information. I've spent many hours ploughing through the Newcastle registers so I was hoping someone might have been able to point me in the direction of an online version. A kind rootsweb member did just that for the Rainham registers I was looking for.

I'll have to try and arrange a trip down to London.

Thanks again for your help.

Hello Chris

Lets build a family......

1895
William Adams married Margaret Ann Walker within the Poplar R.D, London

You have a list of the 5 children all born different places and then when you consider mum & dad not one of them born in the same place which leads me to this........

Perhaps they got fed up of moving and stayed within the area of Rainham or do you know different?

Could this be them?
1944 Mar qtr...Romford R.D (includes Rainham)...Margaret Adams died aged 70
1945 Sep qtr...Thurrock R.D (next door to Rainham) William J Adams died aged 70.

you have matches for all the children getting married within the Romford R.D albeit christian and surname are common so not conclusive by any stretch...

Hello Bryant

I have the family at same address in Rainham (13 Normandy Tce, Cowper Rd) between 1911 census and 1929 electoral roll, also on birth certificate of youngest daughter, Margaret Betty in 1922. I know they were living in Hayes, Middlesex in 1940 when Margaret Betty married and at same address in 1947 (an aunt remembers visiting them there). After that we lost touch so I don't know if they stayed in Hayes or returned to Rainham. The deaths in Rainham are too early as I know they were both still alive in 1947. I haven't been able to find any deaths in Hayes yet.

I did find marriages for the children in Romford area, although as you say it is a very common name so I'm not certain which, if any, are correct.  It does suggest that they didn't make the move to Hayes with their parents, although that is one of the reasons I wanted to check the electoral roll in Hayes to see if any of them were living there with them.

I think I have traced Margaret Ann Walker's family but can't make any headway with William Joseph Adams. The 1901 census has his birthplace as Hanley, Staffs while the 1911 has Southport Lancs. I was hoping a death certificate might give more details. I'm waiting for the 1895 marriage certificate to arrive so maybe that will shed some light.

Not really sure what to try next.

Thanks
Chris

Thanks Bryant

According to 1901 and 1911 census, William Joseph was born in 1875 either in Staffs or in Cheshire. Not sure why the birthplace was different on the two censuses. I've come across different towns but never different counties before.

I've only found 1 in Cheshire but quite a few in Staffs for 1881, including the one you list. So far I haven't been able to make a definite link with any of them. I think I'll wait until the marriage certificate arrives, at least that should give me William's father.

In the meantime, I'd like to track down the deaths. I know William and his wife lived in Hayes, Middlesex, at least between 1940-1947. I last had them in Rainham in 1929 but don't know when they moved to Hayes. Maybe they moved back to Rainham area to be near other children after 1947 and died there.

I'm guessing as there isn't an online version I'll have to make a special trip south to search the electoral registers for Hayes.

Thanks for your help

I have looked at the 1936 registers. And no one of that name is showing up on Wood Green. There is an Abraham Adams on Botwell lane in Hayes.

The LMA/Ancestry project is ongoing and will be for a long time yet, they still haven't sorted out the parish registers which started going online in 2009.

You would most probably be better off considering a trip to the lma where you can look at the registers on microfilm, or to the British Library but registers before 1983 are stored off-site, need to be ordered and take 48 hours to arrive. You will also need a readers ticket to gain admission to the Social sciences reading room.
