Please post your comments here.

Either Diana (or myself in her absence)  will start a new thread each week for your comments. Looking forward to this episode - Magda is a migrant of  Polish and Scottish ancestry.  I love Australia's multi national "melting pot".   Our family branch, being Scottish Migrants will now pass on the family name to ancestors of Scottish and Italian heritage!!  Makes for a great country - and when I think of how much more cosmopolitan Australian has become since we migrated in the early 60's !!!!!!!

Look forward to this show every time it's on. Really enjoyed this episode, Magda is such a great person.

Anyone know the timing of the filming of this episode? Noticed a Christmas tree in one shot, but maybe it was last year?

Tracey.

Well spotted Tracey, Magda's film was made in December 2009 and she and the crew returned to Aus on Xmas Eve after a very chilly time in Poland :)

Madga's show was wonderful. I was amazed the hour went so quickly, I had to check the TV guide to make sure it wasn't a half hour episode.

As to the timing of the episode taping - I think it was during her period with Jenny Craig when she lost so much weight - which I thought was wonderful too.

Congratulation WDYTYA - another fantastic episode.

I too enjoyed the episode. A very different side to Magda. I do always so love her humour. I suspect in this instance she heard a lot she was not really prepared for.

Re her great grandparents in Dublin: It would have been interesting to see some death records for the children. To have lost 10 of 13 seems a lot. I wonder what the circumstances were. Were the deaths genetic or were these tragedies of the times? The poverty was stated but everything else was just very general.

Her grandfather’s police history was some shock. She was prepared for the possibility that he may have been involved in the IRA, which seems not be the case. Instead she learned of a criminal background. (The instances of theft and the drinking) Still her grandfather would have had a lot of responsibility given his father’s early death.

Clearly his war experiences had a serious effect on him and his post war condition must have really affected his family as well as himself. These stories on the tragedy of wars are always so moving. The visions of those suffering with shell shock were terribly graphic. The son (Magda’s Uncle) description of his father was such a contrast to what we had heard. (Articulate, Intellectual, Integrity, Dignity “he was a teacher, cos he taught me how to live”. ) His poem was really moving.

Her journey to Poland was very so sad: The involvement of her father and his family with the Polish Resistance. The visit with her Aunt was so emotional.  :'( Magda seemed to already have some knowledge of what her father had experienced in the war, but it certainly became so much more real for her. The families involvement was all new to her. Hearing what people actually did in these wars is just so eye opening. (I guess the sort of things we really do not like to think about)

I enjoyed seeing such an emotive look at the ravishes of war on families in this episode. (a different slant on war)

Visits to 3 countries, the time just flew for me. I am glad Magda shared her story with us. We just never know what we will find when we start looking into our history. These wars destroyed men. They destroyed families. Magda has certainly evolved from her families traumatic background with a wonderful sense of humour.

Look forward to next week. Keep up the good work Diana and the WDYTYA team.

Cheers Kris  :)

Diana has explained previously, Mclachlan, that it was tried in England in a similar format (not called WDYTYA though) and it didn't rate. And television shows have to rate.

Have copied a quote from the other thread to put onto this one, as Kris advised.   :)

I have to say I found Magda's episode quite different to any Australian ones we've seen before.......two very interesting and obviously emotional stories ......and there must be so many more like that in the backgrounds of Australia's multicultural society.

But how lucky for Magda to have WDYTYA to help her find all that information.

I too have been wondering if Magda was given any more information about the ten children who didn't survive.

i enjoyed the episode very much.
allthough not going back very far and concentrating on just 1 or 2 ancestors is getting to be a bit boring. there was nothing in the show that couldnt have been found in a couple of weekends, no matter how intersesting it was.
also do we have to have a preview of whats coming up at the start of the show. im sure most of us are able to keep our interest for an hour without having to know whats going to happen

I agree with all that Perth said.

I also think there were many unanswered questions surrounding this episode (as often there is).

I do sometimes think that it would be better/more interesting (?) to continue further back through the generations and just touch on the relevant stories rather than go into so much detail about one or two people. However I realize that there is usually a specific angle to each programme, but sometimes I find that I am left a bit wanting especially when it is such a close relative as a father or grandfather that is the extent of the ancestry traced. In these cases it is more like a programme about a couple of interesting ancestors than a genealogy programme. It doesn't really help our understanding of Who We Think They Are.

I also avoided reading about the programme in our TV Guide as even a quick glimpse gave a lot of the story away. It's nice to get a surprise sometimes and I would like to see the press releases give out less information.

The film clips on WDYTYA are always excellent (as are the UK ones) - great archive footage.

Still, all in all, a great programme - great series - very enjoyable.  :)

Loved it!! It's so much better when the person isn't afraid to show thier feelings, and gets right into it.  Magda is a very popular woman, and the episode was great!!.
I couldn't believe it was an hour, either, as there were only 2 ancestors shown.  Not a criticism, both ancestors were fascinating, time just flew by!!

Hi Jude
I agree just having 2 ancestors was quiet okay when their lives were full of mystery and sadness to share it with everyone I think Magna is brave as it was her grandfather close to her.As for the deaths of the children my ancestor lost 7 children all ages and on the mothers  early death found she died of consumption
so the infection would have been passed to her babies and children without her knowing as it would appear they died of a cold or flu. Also damp and cold homes with mould would have been an issue.
The war hit home with me as well as I lost love ones in the war and some came home but with shell shock I now know what that means.
What a fantastic show I havent missed one yet.I found Jack Thompsons of great interest with all his royality he called it he had a convict.
Trouble with show NOT LONG ENOUGH I COULD WATCH IT FOR HOURS  silky

I loved the show too.

What I wish they would do (and I know it's been said before) is show how the research is carried out, and how long it takes to get copies of their records.  The program makes it look too simple, visiting records offices, talking to experts, and having everything laid out on the table.  Then they fly off to all over the world to visit the places they've discovered.  I wish it was that simple. And they never explain what it costs to find all these records, let alone a subscription to A.com which is way too expensive for me.

Agreed. This episode was particularly guilty of this. Absolutely everything was handed to Magda. At least some make an attempt to find something for themselves perhaps using Ancestry to find a few census records or turning a few pages. Even a comment by the researcher about how they came to find the information might be acceptable.

Telling people about their ancestors simply to see their reaction (or how easily they can turn on the waterworks) doesn't appeal to me. I know there was also substance and story behind this, but some of the WDYTYA's I've enjoyed most were sans tears.   :)

Our library has paid for A.com and we can access it there
Not that everything is right on there. Its the same as IGI when others submit there branches .When information is bought from others it is not known if its right.
Even on cd roms the info can be wrong. One in particuler has my great aunts birthday wrong being born on the date of her brother  .Nothing like doing the hard yakker yourself .I think WDYTYA
gets the info quickly so as not to bore the viewers. We know it takes weekes sometimes months to receive anything.Sad so many have no compassion .A good cry doesnt hurt anyone. My ancestors are close to my heart and I am very passionate about them especially when I read my great uncle 5ft with trenched feet and shell shock marched through snow from England to Belgium after getting out of hospital going back to the front  that would bring a tear to any hard hearts ......... :'(Silky :'(

Hi
re-read over the comments and agree with some of the people on it who said to go back and see how ancestors they can find - and show how they did it.  There is nothing to stop them from showing important events as well - just cut out some of the travelling and tell people where they have travelled to.

I like the SBS shows of 'who you think you are'...I went out and got their latest magazine as well after the show aired.

Magda's family story was very heart wrenching for her and everyone who watched it I think.

I cant imagine the determination, courage and strenth not to mention the adversity experienced by our Ancestors..they truly were tough people.

I watch the Channel Nine one when its on here in Australia but its mainly on American Celebrities..and I think Americans get enough shows done about them..its nice to see the Aussie version and hopefully one day down the Track every so often SBS might do a show on an ordinary every day Australian person.

Hi Bee,

The only legal way that you can see the Aus WDYTYA?'s is by purchasing DVD's from SBS online - http://www.sbs.com.au/shop/search/index/keyword/Who+Do+You+Think+You+Are

Please note that there are currently 7 series that have been broadcast.

They have at times appeared on YouTube but usually got pulled for copyright infringement, not surprisingly.

As Diana says you can purchase the DVDs from SBS or in fact other stockists in Australia but be aware that anything over £15 will get hit with duties on arrival in the UK. The duty isn't that high, the problem is the excessive fee charged by Royal Mail. I got caught out the other year and it cost me the equivalent of 50% extra on the price of the DVD and postage combined as the amount had been reduced from £18 to £15 earlier in the year. :-X

It's a shame that anyone outside of Australia cannot purchase copies through iTunes, although I do wish the BBC would purchase them to broadcast rather than the US version as they are far more interesting. :-\

The government charges VAT on anything above £15 outside of the EU, it used to be £18 until about 3 years ago and had been that for several decades. :-X  The 20% VAT isn't so much the problem.  Last time I purchased a DVD from Australia which was just under £18 plus postage, it cost me an extra £8, £3 VAT (I think it was 17.5% a the time, its now 20%) plus £5 fee to Royal Mail to collect it.  I understand from a relative that the Royal Mail fee is higher than that now. ::)

I hope the SBS lady is still reading this and will consider allowing we Poms to download on iTunes even though it's probably less revenue than the DVD's, it will still bring in some dollars for SBS. ;)

and all this is why piracy is so popular. try and buy or pay for a product from a company and its expensive, time consuming and difficult. the option is to go to a torrent site and after 2 or 3 clicks you are watching the prog you want for free. even though you tried to pay a reasonable price for it. sbs could have this series available to download from their web site at, say $2 a show or $10 a series and they would make money. instead they will moan about piracy just like all the other media outlets out there

Completely agree with you .... I was going to suggest that those who wanted to watch these programmes investigate Torrents. I know it can be a complicated and frustrating process, but can be worth the effort (or at least OH tells me so)  ;)

I'm a bit suspicious of Torrent sites because of security issues.  I know some in the past who've ended up with nasties on their PCs after using them.  I suspect some are better than others but it would put me off.

Well after a fair old scout around yesterday on the Apple store and Google store there is no alternative to buying DVD's from Australia and then getting ripped off for VAT and delivery.  Copyright (or summit) "forbids you to buy downloads from your country."

You try to do the right thing but sometimes that doesn't work out.  ;)

You can pay for a stealth option which lets you log in from a proxy server so "it" thinks you are in the same country.  I used to use one in Australia so I could keep up to date with Corrie.  ;D  Of course I was watching up to date episodes not back catalogues.

Bee, you could try a certain auction site as some of the Australian stores do sell through there (and ship overseas) and sometimes the prices are below £15, albeit the postage is a bit expensive compared to the actual cost they pay to send it.  It usually depends on what the exchange rate is doing, unfortunately at the moment its on a bit of a downward spiral. ::)

Yes I've read about the Proxy sites, just never thought it was worth the costs for the odd programme.

Thanks Smud, it's not really worth it to me as I only want the odd episode here and there which is why I got excited when I saw single eps on iTunes.  :-\

You can just sign in for a month here and there on the proxy sites but as I said I only used it for current TV progs so unless SBS is showing repeats then it'd be pretty pointless.

I have done that torrent thing a few times in the past but must admit to being very rusty these days and I don't have unlimited broadband either so have I have to keep an eye my downloads/uploads as I got caught out last month watching a lot of episodes of a crime TV series via YouTube on my telly and went over my quota.  ::)

I'm a bit suspicious of Torrent sites because of security issues.  I know some in the past who've ended up with nasties on their PCs after using them.  I suspect some are better than others but it would put me off.
these days most of the torrent sites are pretty safe. as long as you look past the ads and dont click on them.once you learn how to do it, its very easy.
