Title: Which magazine?
Post by: tedscout on Sunday 28 November 10 03:05 GMT (UK)
My dear hubby wants to buy me a subscription to a Genealogy magazine for Christmas.

A lovely RCer has passed on some back copies of Who Do You Think You Are? and Family History Monthly, and I love them both.

I am in Australia with all English heritage and my hubby is Australian going back 4-5 generations and then all UK.

I would love some opinions on which magazines you all think are the best.

Thanks for the help, cheers Ted

Hi,
If  it were me, I'd go for "who do you think you are".
we here  (in Aus)are are a back issue behind here  ( I buy mine from the newsagents for $12)

I know that the coming  next month ( ie  it 's in newsagents for us in Dec) has  Australian guides/articles. (uk nov issue) . Even if you don't get a sub ( which I don't have , I just buy mine off the shelf from my newsagent), next month may be of some  interest to your hubby

I've bought how many genealogy mags over the years, but I do enjoy who do you think you are mag - It is the only one I tend to buy these days at $12 (what my newsagents charge for it) a pop . I'm  Welsh  born and have  Welsh Irish parents. Most magazine articles are  very, very English related, ie no relevance to Welsh, Irish and Scottish people , bar the  odd token gestures (including 99.9% of who do you think are ) ....  BUT What I personally find about who do you think you are magazine  even if it is not  relating to your country ( which 99% of the time it is not! it's an interesting read. I  do enjoy reading it.

The other magazine you mentioned family history - I used to get that  but don't bother any more amongst many other mags.

I do find that " who do you think you are"  is  a good read no matter what level , or country you are  from with your research , it is  an enjoyable read

 I Hope that helps
Kind regards

I like "Ancestors", which I borrow from my local library.  :)

Your Family Tree is my favourite, but I also buy Your Family History (edited by Nick Barratt) and WDYTYA if there are articles/discs of interest

Hi Ted,

I've been subscribing to Family History Monthly for a few years now, and I sometimes also buy WDYTYA? and the other genealogy mags. I feel that FHM is the best value for money - it's the cheapest - but it has lots of useful information in it, and is a good read. They frequently have articles relevant to Australian or Celtic research as well as English work.

My friend subscribes to WDYTYA? and just told me that the latest issue is £5.99 in the UK. Personally, I think this is too much to pay for a magazine.

The best thing to do would be to go with the one that you feel will be of most use.

Hope this helps!

Louise

Family History Monthly (as Ruskie said)  It is brilliant,  I cheat and get mine from the Library.  Each month there is a C.D included.  They have links to sites, great stories etc.  Warning you will neglect your family once you start reading ;D
