Title: Welsh to English Translation Please
Post by: SuT on Saturday 27 November 10 22:08 GMT (UK)
I cannot find the right translation for the following.  I can understand some Welsh but this stumped even the translation websites:-

Mewn parchus.  Coffadviriaetham JOHN RADCLIFFE o'r Uplands Llanddidian yr hwn y fu farw Mai 10 1903  yn 61 oed

which came out in English as:-

In respectable. JOHN RADCLIFFE Uplands Llanddidian Coffadviriaetham of whom died May 10th 1903 aged 61

Can anybody tell me what Coffadviriaetham means please?

Thanks Osprey that would make sense.  It's from a gravestone but I haven't seen it I've only got a typed transcript.

Cheers

Hi SuT,
Osprey has sussed it correctly: the original inscripion would have been: " mewn parchus goffadwriaeth am . . ." = in respectful remembrace of . . .

Thanks very much Pinot.  Must brush up on my Welsh, I've lived in England too long but it was the full stop that threw me - might have been a mark on the stone that made its' way into the typed pages!

Thanks again

SuT
