Post by: Seoras on Saturday 27 November 10 21:40 GMT (UK)
Can anyone make out the name of this ship.My guess is SS Bancoosh but I can't find any reference to a ship of that name.By the SS I suppose it's a steamsip and here(1882) was being used as a troop carrier.

Top marks Cawood and Jen,I think you hit the nail on the head. The Bancoora seems to have done many trips to India and the Middle East where this particular soldier was serving.Jen,loved the info on it running aground with an elephant, rhinoceros, monkeys and parrots on board. For animal lovers all survived apart from the rhino who found it all too much and died two days later.
