Hi Everybody,
My Family Tree has several FRENCH persons in East Sussex and I am trying to find some more. So far I have:-
Mary HOAD ch 12/12/1730 Herstmonceux
married (presumably)
Robert FRENCH b 1728
parents of
Joseph FRENCH ch 29/05/1748 Rye d 1823 Rye
married 26/06/1776 Salehurst
Lydia GOSS b 1753 d 26/09/1846 Salehurst
Children:-
1. William FRENCH ch 15/01/1777 Rye
2. Robert FRENCH b 1778 Salehurst ch 01/11/1778 Rye d 11/10/1845 Bexhill
married 05/12/1796 Bodiam
Catherine CROFT b 16/04/1778 Salehurst ch 06/01/1779 Burwash d 11/04/1807 Burwash
Children :-
i. Edward FRENCH ch 30/06/1803 Salehurst
ii. Robert FRENCH b 12/05/1805 Salehurst
married c. 1834
Elizabeth PILE b 05/12/1808 d 23/09/1865 Camperdown NSW
Robert & Elizabeth arrived Australia 1841
3. Elizabeth FRENCH ch 28/01/1781 Rye
4. Juliet FRENCH ch 08/04/1787 Salehurst
It didn’t seem too difficult since there were so many FRENCH in Sussex, but so far I can’t make any more connections. I tried the excellent www.sussex-opc.org/ website, which gave nothing new, and in my part of Australia it is not practical to visit an LDS Family History Centre to view parish register films.
So I was wondering if anybody might share any FRENCH info related to those above please?
Best wishes to all,
Peter.

Hi Omega,
Thanks for your replies. That all seems a bit more trustworthy than what I already had, so I will alter my Family Tree accordingly. I can see how a transcription problem turned GUEST into GOSS, but I suppose Salehurst was a guess, since it is barely 1 mile from Robertsbridge.
Until I research further, I will assume the newly altered Mary and Robert are still Joseph's parents.
Many thanks for your help,
Peter.

I note that those declaring a family interest in Sussex Frenches between 1700-1800 on Genes Reunited has 34 entries for Salehurst, 10 for Rye, and 3 for Iden. Your Robert 1705 is mentioned and there is some duplication, but there may be some there that you have yet to add to your research.

Hi Omega,
Stupendous stuff! Thank you so much! ;D ;D ;D
I've just been checking out www.salehurst.netfirms.com. Potentially a great website, but I suppose it is still early days, since there isn't much on there yet.
One small point please ... re Robert baptised 30 Oct 1800. I have Robert born 12/05/1805 Salehurst, which fits in nicely with the details recorded on his voyage to Australia. Please let me know if you find another Robert, since there is a chance the 1800 one died in infancy.
Very best wishes and many thanks,
Peter.
-
Hi Peter
These Frenches are in my family tree too.
I initially thought they were my direct line, as a Charlotte French 1778 (daughter of John French 1746 - on your list) married a William Pearson - he had a son William, who I thought was mine, but it turned out that my William was son of Thomas Pearson, who was brother to the William Pearson who married Charlotte French.
Hope that makes sense.
Snowy
-
Hi Snowy,
Yep! Thanks for that! If you feel like adding some more detail, that would be welcome too.
Many Thanks,
Peter
-
Hi Peter
Re reply 11,regarding Elizabeth & Juliet,i had found them for you but read your "Tree" wrong, put it down to a senior moment ;D

Hi Omega,
That's brilliant! :o I knew nothing about Harriet, Alice and Mary Ann. :o They were not on the ship to Australia, so it is reasonable to assume they were dead by 1841.
There was a daughter Sarah Jane PILE born 1826 before they married - she sailed with them - and they had a few more children in Australia, with a total of sixteen. :-X
Many thanks again,
Peter.
-
Oh dear Peter
I have sadly found the girls :( :( :( :
Harriet,buried 22 Dec 1832,aged 5
Alice,buried 22 Dec 1832,ages 3 years 11months
Mary Ann,16 Dec 1832,1 year 9 months
They all died of Scarlet Fever, living at Robertsbridge & buried at Salehurst.
The poor parents,life was hard
And then little Alfred aged 19weeks,3rd Aug 1835. :(
Kind Regards
Omega
-
Hi Omega,
Oh dear, burying 3 little daughters in one week. :'( And nowadays some parents avoid having their children immunised. Mine thought free immunisation was absolutely marvellous.
Robert & Elizabeth arrived in Australia with Sarah Jane, George, William Everitt, Eliza Jane, and Richard. Their next six children died in infancy, Richard died aged 11, and another died aged 33.
Many thanks for your brilliant help,
Peter.
-
Hi Peter
Same here ,some parents dont bother.Thankfully all my grandkids have had their injections.
It does`nt bear thinking about, losing all those children :(
If you need anymore help, you know where to find me ;D,or if i find anything else out, watch this space ;D
Kind regards
Omega

1930 Death Reg as Mary J FRENCH - father James, mother Caroline
I record her as Mary Jane because almost everything except her marriage registration supports that as opposed to Mary Ann. I suspect there was a transcription error. A Mary A HARE was also born 1852 NSW to parents John and Ellen, but our Mary Jane’s birth and death were both registered as parents being James and Caroline. Furthermore, the death notice and funeral notice in the Sydney Morning Herald record her as Mary Jane, and people rarely mis-spell their mother’s name for that.
I hope this is of use to you,
Peter.

Hi Peter. This is fantastic. Awesome. Have printed it out and will go and have a good read.
Bye for now
