Title: 1861/1871 lookup please
Post by: jubee on Friday 26 November 10 13:56 GMT (UK)
Hello,
I'm trying fo find a John and Hannah Stone both b.c.1836 on the 1861/1871 censuses.

On the 1881 census (Ref: RG11 3929/68 pg 34) Hannah is a widow with children Thomas b. c. 1862, John b.c. 1860, Emma b.c. 1867 and James Henry b.c. 1876. in Hulme Manchester living with a possible relative John Mould. (He had married a Hannah Stone in 1845)

I've found a death for a John Stone in 1/4 to Dec 1875 and from James Henry's marriage in 1904 his father is "John Stone (deceased)".

Any help would be gratefully appreciated  :)

To make things easier I think you should give the details from the 1881 census since the birthplaces are important

4 Ribston Street, Hulme, Manchester
John Mould Head Widow 64 Coal Dealer Stafford Sudbury
Hannah Stone Widow 45 Derbyshire Boylestone
Thomas Son 19 Carter Lancashire Manchester
John son 21 Blacksmith Cheshire Didsbury
Emma daur 14 Machine Hand Lancashire Manchester
Jas Hy son 5 School Lancashire Manchester

not easy finding this Hannah and family but I have found

1871
4 Upper Moss Lane, Hulme, Lancashire
John Mould Head M 54 Coal Dealer Derby Roston
Hannah Mould Wife M 63 Derby Boylestone
with lodgers

Thanks MaryA,
The Sudbury Staffordshire birthplace is what threw me......although looking at a map Boylestone and Roston are not that far away.

Are there any Stones living with them?

Afraid there are no stones living with them.

It would be worth investigating the John Mould/Hannah Stone marriage as often looking all round a situation helps to clarify things, but they aren't easy to find either  >:(

Thanks MaryA and heywood,
I am trying to "go all round the houses" as it were  ::)

See my previous post which started this off:

The 1861 info, heywood seems to fit in with ages and places of birth but no husband  ???

Apologies MaryA your post came through as I posted last message.

My 2x grt grandfather John D Stone was born illegitimate in 1849 at 23 Hodson Street Salford. But in 1851 he is a "nurse child " living in Cheshire. I was intrigued by who was living at Hodson Street in 1851 and found (thanks to a kind RC ) that the Mould's and a nephew George Stone were there so I am trying to unravel the link.

Before I send for any certificates, I'm trying to find as much info as possible to make sure I'm not going off at a tangent......

I am now more confused than ever  ;D

I'm not sure now how these people link to your John D Stone b 1849 in Manchester.
from your previous post you have him in all the censuses so... are you trying to find out what happened to Ann Stone his mother?

Therefore - these people may be of no relevance to your search... or have I missed a vital bit of information?

Sorry heywood it is rather confusing  ;D
I am trying to find more about Ann but as she is not on any census with John D , I have no other info on her. I don't have an age or birthplace etc. So this reference to other Stones living at the same address as where John D was born, set me trying to find a link.

Perhaps I am clutching at straws a bit but it was worth a shot  :)

Thanks for all your help and apologise if this seems a wild goose chase...

On no worries about the wildgoose chase - just trying to clarify matters.

I have been trying to find your John in censuses-- there's only a couple around right time but you mention Ann Gallimore in 1871 - is she with him then as I can't find him with her.

Have you looked for a baptism for him?

I know it costs money but you could also send for the birth certificate of George Stone b 1847 Salford. I know it wouldn't be of much help but they may be the same mother.

In 1851, 1871 John and Hannah Mould's ages are about 10 yrs difference.
So the Hannah in 1881 is Hannah Stones from 1861 census - is that right?

That would fit with the death in 1877 - Hannah aged 68 yrs.

Yes, the Hannah (Mould) in 1871/1851 is around 10 years older than John and it looks as though she dies in 1877 aged 68.

The other Hannah (Stone) is the one on 1881 and 1861.

I think I shall have to send off for the certificates in particular the George Stone b. 1847 in Salford to see who his parents were. If his mother is Ann, then his uncle and aunt will be John and Hannah Mould.

I've tried looking for baptisms of John and George Stone but no success.

Thanks for your time and effort, they are greatly appreciated  :)

I can't see Hannah (older one) and John Mould in 1861 anywhere  ???

I noticed this one though:

1851 HO107; Piece: 2218; Folio: 161; Page: 19
Barton upon Irwell
Ann Stone 34 yrs unmarried House Servant b Boylstone
She has been transcribed as 24 yrs but it looks to be 34 yrs
(Barton is next door to Salford)

If she is b 1817 (not 1827) she could be the Ann who is at
1841 HO107; Piece 179; Book: 9; Folio: 6; Page: 7
recorded as 20 yrs in 1841

Can't find her anywhere else though  :-\

Found them in 1861 but not much help  ::)
Transcribed as Moner

1861  RG9; Piece: 2913; Folio: 87; Page: 15

living at 25 Hodson Street (after all that searching - still there!)

I haven't posted all- think you have access Jubee - if not I can post.

Thanks once again heywood for looking at this.

The Ann Stone in 1851 in Barton upon Irwell does look promising especially as her birthplace is Boylestone the same as Hannah Mould (nee Stone)  :)

I shall put all this new info in some kind of order and decide my next move !!
