From wills and the census I have found that my ancestors, the Harwood family, ran the Fox Inn in Kingham in the mid 19c.
I cannot find any trace of this pub now. Does anybody know of surviving references or pictures.

Rocala,
Regret the Fox Inn is no longer in existance and is to-day a private residence.Do not know when the Inn closed but my uncle wrote a book on Kingham and I will check to see if he made a reference to the closing of the pub. Would this help you at all?
David.

Hi David
Thanks for writing. The Fox was in the 1871 census, but I could find no trace in the 1881 so I would put the time of closure there.

Rocala,
Have found two items of interest in my Uncle's book and give below just the relative sections---written 1953-7.
An interesting point is that the Court Leet was held in the Fox Inn, the house now occupied by Mr. Bob Hedges. It is exactly opposite to my home and I can see it as I write this item.
Proceeding up the old street of the village we come to the Fox Inn (81) where was held the Court Leet, the inkeeper being John Harwood who was also a plumber and glazier.

Thank you for this info Kingham. Censuses mention John being both a Plumber and an Innkeeper, but I had no knowledge of him being a Glazier too.
Happy Christmas to you.
-
I believe plumbing and glazing were allied trades in the past as both used lead and required skill in working lead - in pipes, gutterings and joints for plumbers and in leading in leaded-light windows on the glazing side.
-
Thanks HeatherLynne, I was not aware of this.

Hi Bob I have seen your PM but have not been able to reply as I need to have posted 3 times to use PM so here's post No2
-
Me again post No.3 so with a bit of luck PM will magically activate.
BTW 99% certain that the John in Texas was my brother. I will be speaking to him later so will ask. I am picking up my Dad from Heathrow a little later after a trip round the Med so I will show him your PM.
All the best
Chris
