Help.
When a person is killed in a mining accident(Tawd Vale Colliery) and there is an inquest where will I find the record? c 1887. I have a death certificate but gives little information. ???

The Coal Mining History Resource Web Site gives details of mining accidents, miners deaths etc a very good place for seeking mining information.

Owd Fossil - in general inquest records were not kept, though it may be worth checking the relevant Records Office. The usual suggestion on here is to try local newspapers for reports - again these are likely to be at local & county records offices/local studies centres etc as well as at the British Library in London (Colindale). There are some online (the "Gale" collection) via the British Library - there is a subscription service, but some local libraries give access (including Lancashire I think).
There a couple of local history sites that have hits for the colliery - the Skelmersdale Heritage Society have a feature on the disaster there in 1897 - 10 years after "your" accident; but there is other data there:

The Wigan World site also has a few hits and has lots of local information:

Thanks for help. I have looked on the "Skelmersdale and W World" web pages but can find nothing about specific deaths. The coroner was Samuel Brighouse. I have found that he was the coroner for Lancashire for many years and became a Lord. My ancestor is a lot harder to trace ???
Many Thanks to all.

The local paper would be the Ormskirk Advertiser. I believe it's on film in Ormskirk Library.
Skelmersdale library may also have it and other information on the disaster. It might be worth contacting them.

Thanks G.
But the death I am reseaching was 10 years before the Tawd Vale disaster?
I will look at The Omskirk Advertiser though!

Sorry didn't read it properly!
However I would think the inquest for your date may well have been reported in the paper.

Thanks Geff & Gibel.
The Coalmining History Resource Centre site was a help as it gave a little more information on what happened leading up to the "accident".
I will also look in The Ormskirk Advertiser as this may give me a little more info.
But as his age is 42 on the mine records, and 45 on his death certificate.

not sure if you have found the information, but if your still looking, I can ask at the Skelmersdale library for you :)
