Title: Dumbarton family
Post by: mrst on Monday 11 April 05 22:22 BST (UK)
Hi there
I am trying to trace back my grans side of the family who were from Brucehill . Got as far back as her grandparents who were George Mitchel and Margaret White . On her mothers side Charles Burgoyne and Barbara Moodie . I think they must have born around 1870/80 . Any help or tips where to go next again would be appriciated .
Thanks v much
Ange

Other names in my Dumbarton tree are Dixons , Kennedys , Fitzsimmons .

George Mitchell and Margaret White married in Dunbarton on 17th July 1863

George was the son of Peter Mitchell and Helen nee Dick. Peter was deceased at the time of the marriage but his occupation listed was a writer.

George was a ships carpenter and was aged 25 at the time of the marriage.

Margaret White was the daughter of James White and Isabella nee Crawford.

Margaret was a domestic servant, she was 19 at the time of the marriage -  her father occupation was listed as a Sawyer.

will add to this as I find more :D

Best Wishes

Hello, I know this doesn't help any with your family, but I just wanted to say that my grandfather, Edward Owen was from Brucehill, Dumbarton.  Before he moved to the US, he lived at 72 Napier Crescent, Brucehill, Dumbarton.  You never know, he or his family may have known yours.

Sincerely, Angela Owen

Mrst,
There is something that you may be able to help me with.  I am planning a trip to Scotland next year.  I would like to try to find some relatives that are still there if possible so that I can visit them.  Do you know how I could find out if there are any still living in or around Dumbarton?

   Thanks, Angela

Angela, try me with their names, ages etc. I might know them, or someone who does.

If not I'll try the local phone book for you.

thanks for the reply.

Here is what I know.  My grandfather was Edward Owen born 1926 lived at 72 Napier Crescent.  His parents were Robert Owen and Helen Martin both born in 1887.  Edward had 3 sisters:Betty, Margaret and Nellie.  Betty married a Steven Campbell and had two daughters Mary and Mae.  There last known address is 38 Flash Five, Valeview Terrace, Bellsmyre.  Margaret married a Danny Coggins and had 3 children: Brian, Margaret(who moved to Italy) and Mary.   I think that Nellie died at a young age.  Edward also had 4 brothers:Robert(who had a taxi service), David(who moved to Toronto), Alec and Billy.  I am not sure who all is still alive and I know this may not be a lot to go on.

Edward moved to the US around 1946.  His father Robert died in 1941 and his mother Helen died in 1965.  My main goal is to find out if I have any relatives still in Scotland and to contact them.
Thank you for your help, Angela :)

Hi Angela
This is either a complete stroke of luck or a complete coinsidence ! I have looked up the phone book for you and a S Campbell is living in Valeveiw Terrece right now ! Could that be a very elderly Stephen ? Or mayby a relation ?
My mum was born and bred in Bellsmyre so I will quiz her this week . It is quite a small housing estate so you never know .
Will also quiz my husbands side of the family about the brucehill side . this too is a small estate where everyone knows each other .
Out of curiosity , where are you from ?
Speak soon

hello, I live in Shubuta, Mississippi, USA.  It is a nice little southern town about an hour and a half north of the Gulf of Mexico.  It gets really hot here.  Today it got up to 98 degrees.  And it is very humid.  I was born in Mobile, Alabama though and was raised in Augusta, GA.  I like living here, but also i  love to see other places.  When I come to SCotland next year, I hope to stay a while to have time to see different things.  I really appreciate your help

Thanks, ANgela

Hi Angela

Apart from the names in the phone book I havent got any more info for you . Completley forgot to ask mum and hubbys family about your names in Bellsmyre and brucehill . Will ask at the weekend . There is a brilliant website called scotlands people you should check out . I have 5 origional handwritten documents from them dating back to early 1800 for the dumbarton side of the family . For example on a wedding cert of my great grandmother there is the names of their parents , their address and what they done for a living . Its well worth a look . Speak soon

Hi Angela I found this site by pure chance and saw your old post regarding your Dumbarton family I and just wanted to let you know that a new facebook page has been set up called The Great Brucehill Story that could be useful to you.  I was brought up in Castlehill and know the Owen family who I think came originally from Brucehill.

Kind Regards
Theresa Mcnally
