Title: Strathruddy (1775) - where about in Fife?
Post by: magliano on Saturday 20 November 10 22:04 GMT (UK)
William Skirving (c.1745 – 1796) was one of the five Scottish Martyrs for Liberty. A history of him on Wikipedia says he married Rachel Abercrombie in 1775 and set about farming at Strathruddy Fife on land inherited from her father Andrew Abercombie.

Williamson's Directory for Edinburgh 1784 identifies him as - Skivering Will, of Strathruddy

I have been unable to identify a location for Strathruddy in Fife.

Can anyone advise on where this farmland may have been or advise on likely sources for tracking it down

It's in the parish of Auchterderran in west Fife.

Many thanks.

I was sure I used the spelling Strathruddie on Google Maps but it did not come up.

I will now be making use of the Old-maps.co.uk website

There's an academic research project underway to document and explain all the place-names of Fife in 4 large volumes, 3 of which are now out, and I have copies of them. I found Strathruddy in the index to vol.1, and that's how I learned it was in Auchterderran parish.

Then I typed Auchterderran into my search-engine, and that's how I found the link to the old maps site.

Modern map and photographs https://www.geograph.org.uk/gridref/NT2197

First edition Ordnance Survey six-inch map https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=17.0&lat=56.16421&lon=-3.25770&layers=257&b=1&o=100&marker=56.15910,-3.27350

Google map of same area https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@56.1642,-3.2577,16.29z?entry=ttu- note that Strathruddie is labelled Drysdale, presumably because there's a business operating there by the name of Drysdale.

Don't imagine that you can use Google maps for finding individual farms, because, like this one, many farms and hamlets are not shown, even if they still exist.
