Title: Josiah Burgess b1820 Adlington, Cheshire
Post by: Danae on Saturday 20 November 10 21:33 GMT (UK)
Josiah Burgess is my great great grandfather.

I've stumbled across a record today on ancestry showing a Josiah Burgess JAILED for 6 months in Cheshire in 1845 for larceny  :o

The age of the offender is two years out but there aren't any other Josiah Burgesses on the census so I guess this is my relative (oh, the shame)

Has anyone any ideas how I might be able to find out more about this crime, especially without actually going to cheshire which is about 4 hours drive :-)

Thanks for the link.
I don't think it goes up to 1845 yet though (on the grounds that i tried searching smith 1845 and got no results).
I guess a trip will be needed after all :)

Just checked and it only goes up to 1842 at present although it is an ongoing project.

I've amended the link to reflect this.

Manchester Times of 1st March 1845 has a report of cases/sentences for the Intermediate Sessions held at Nether Knutsford.
“Josiah Burgess, 23, and William Howarth, 17, for stealing one trap, the property of Peter Allworth, of Chorley, six months hard labour each.”

Thanks Dave.

That's really useful. There's a 15yr old William Howarth on the same page as Josiah Burgess on the 1841 census.
