Title: Royal Artillery NCO
Post by: Duckies on Saturday 20 November 10 21:15 GMT (UK)
Some help needed to identify this man : Its a Royal Artillery unifom which has been dated to between 1870 & 1890's. He isnt the man I thought it was & so was wondering whether anyone could advise whether he could be Frederick William Jones who was b around 1859 (give or take 5 yrs) in Aldby Norfolk. He was my Gt grandfather & I cant find him  in the 1891 census, so it is possible he may have been abroad with the army ?  . He was born with the surname of Sones ( which does vary in spelling for a few census) but he also went by the name of Jones, which is the name he married with & all the family are called Jones . FWJ parents were William & Lucy Sones however. He dies in 1905 and in the 1901 census is showing as a Coachman in Kensington, London.
Can anyone also hazzard a guess at what is over the pocket of the jacket looks like a couple of something white ????

Duckies.

I think your fellow is a Battery Sergeant Major ... although I'm no expert at all on the variations of Sergeant Major.

If you posted to the Uniforms sub forum of Victorian Wars Forum, http://www.victorianwars.com, I'm certain the experts there could substantially reduce your time frame of 1870s - 90s .... which may assist your research.

It is a brilliant photo of his badge of rank.
