I am hoping to find some refernce to the following addresses. Club Houses, Albion Road and nest Place.. The families I am researching are Hill and Fellowes. Does anyone have any idea where these places would have been.
-
Hello, im not sure about the other 2 but Albion Road would probably be the one running from the Clarence Roundabout to Twmpath Road. Its in Pontypool, but like a lot of streets at the time was classed as Trevethin.

Club Row is on the Tranch and Nest Place" which I think is West Place was in the middle of Pontypool town which is now Wilkinson's.

westbrae,
A warm welcome to Rootschat. Below is a link to Pontypool Town Plans 1880/81
http://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html
Click on link and enter co-ordinates 328093 200934
When maps loaded, click on "1880/81 Pontypool Town Plans". This will transfer old map to main window.
When loaded, click on main window to "zoom" in. User slider bars to locate West Place (off Crane Street)
To see Albion Road in 1880/81, replace co-ordinates 328093 200934 with new co-ordinates 327921 200527
Repeat above steps.
Re "Club Houses" do you have any other info you can add?
regards

Thankyou for the map. Actually West Place is a little lower down and on the left of Crane Street not on the right shown on the map.As for "Club Row" there are about 10 houses still standing just above the Tranch (look for Tranch Road)

Lenny9,
Not sure which map you are looking at but, on the map I've given, West Place is to the left of Crane Street, just above "Japan Court"?
Isn't this where Wilkinsons' is now?
-
hanes teulu,
Yes you are right in a way. One map I looked at had West place on the left going up the hill whereas it is on the right.Just below Japan Court. Exactly where Wilkinsons is now.Sorry about the confusion.
-
West Place was deff on the right as you walked up Crane St. My family lived in No, 14 West St a few yards away . What was left of West Place/West St/Old Japan was knocked down late 80s, early 90s

What a useful thread!
I also had relatives in Club Houses and never thought to wonder where they were! It is sometimes possible to work it out by looking at the enumerator's "walk" or route on the first page of the census book, if you ever get stuck again. At least it gives you a proximity to other roads that might still exist.
Thanks everyone - fascinating.
Kind regards, Arranroots ;)
