My rectory angers  me so ! They will not give me any information that is written on headstones. I am told it is not allow to be given out. Is this common? I am told it is better to strip the headstones of moss if I really want to know. Not very christian in my opinion ! And advice ?

Well is is written on the headstones for people to read.
So you can read it or get a friend to read it.

If so some devious reason they wanted to prevent this, they could if they saw you touching the headstones - for lichens are protected species in UK!
Above all enjoy your researches!
Take a strong light and illuminate the stone tangentially
