I am looking for ANY info on Felix Banigan (abt 1850) who married Mary Clifford. I believe that they hailed from Monaghan. Felix was my GGgrandfather. They had at least one son, Patrick (my Ggrandfather), who was born abt 1872.
The family moved to Glasgow, Scotland, sometime between 1881 and 1891 (when they show up on the census, without Felix).
Thanks ;D

Hi,
I'd suggest you start by looking for Patrick's birth in the indexes at the Dublin GRO or your local family history centre. Or the parents marriage if it was post 1864. Then you'll have an address to go to parish records.

Thanks Kate,
I'll have another (about the millionth) try to contact my local FHS :(
Can you search the Dublin GRO online??

HI,
No you cannot search the Dublin GRO online. The births 1864 to (I think) 1868 are in the IGi database of the family history search thingy from the CLS. Does anyone know if this includes marriages and deaths too from that timeframe?

Patrick Bannigan, son of Felix from Co Monaghan was married to my grandmother's aunt, Sarah Miller. When her parents died in 1915 , Patrick and Sarah took her in to their home. Previously Patrick served in the Boer War and met his wife because they both lived in the same backlands tenement at 43 Duke Street Glasgow. I have Patrick's death certificate and can remember some stories my grandmother told me about him.
-
Thanks for contacting me ;D
Which of Sarah's sisters was your grandmother's aunt, Agnes or Christina?
I never knew about the Boer war connection and any other info would be very welcomed. My mother always refers to Patrick as being an absolute gentleman with a heart of gold.
I know about the family home at Duke Street, but not much before that.
Do you know Patrick's date of birth? The age he is given at his marriage in 1895 (23) and that on his headstone in 1940 (68) give a DOB of 1872. But I have come across an IGI record of a Patrick Bannigan (son of Felix Bannigan & Mary Clifford) being born in Ballybay, Co. Monaghan in 1864.
Do you know when Patrick's parents came to Glasgow? Any info on the family is appreciated.
I have some old photo's of Patrick and Sarah if you would like a copy.

My grandmother was the daughter of Sarah's sister Agnes Miller who married James Fitzpatrick. They both died young in 1915, in the same hospital, a day apart. Agnes had multiple sclerosis and James had bronchitis. So my grandmother, Catherine Fitzpatrick went to live with her aunt Sarah and Uncle Paddy, as she called Patrick Bannigan . I'm afraid I know very little about when they came over from Ireland and I've only got the same information as you.
Both he and Sarah seem to have been extremely generous because they took in all the waifs and strays of the family when they hit hard times. I found records in the Glasgow Poor Laws which referred to sister Flora and her 3 children also living with Sarah and Paddy.
I really would love photos if you have any with Sarah in them. I only have one photo of my grandmother as a young girl and none of her parents, so anything you have would be greatly appreciated.

Flora (Florence) and her husband, Sandy (Alexander McCormack) lived with Sarah & Paddy for a time. I am not sure if this was at their home at 53 Glamis Road, Parkhead or not but I can still remember visiting them at that address and Sarah was living there with them. Incidentally, my grandmother (Isabella) lived next door.
I have attached two photos for you: -
The first is of of three generations of the family outside the house (tenement flat) at Glamis Road. The woman who is doing the windae-hingin' is Sarah. The woman who is standing is Isabella, and the smallest boy (dark hair) is Vincent Bissette, Isabella's son.
The second is a family group Taken at the Banigan family holiday home (a converted single-decker bus) at Port Seton. Sarah (Maw), Paddy (jnr), Isabella (Bella), Paddy (snr).

hello i am james bannigan the woman calld Isabella was my ma but how ever someone has put in a lot of rubish about us half of it was not true
-
Hello James,
There may have been more than one Isabella Bannigan living in Glasgow (the name Isabella appears to be reasonably common in the Bannigan tree).
You say that half of what has been posted is "rubbish", can you let me know where the common ground is?
The younger woman in each of the photographs is Isabella Bannigan who married John Bissette and is not your "ma".
I noticed that your surname is Bannigan. Is that your mother's birth surname or her married name? If it is her married name then any link to my part of the Bannigan tree will be through your father rather than your mother.
The ladies in the photographs are my grandmother, Isabella (nee Bannigan) and great-grandmother, Sarah (nee Miller), and knowing that I do not have an uncle James makes it pretty clear that you must be descended through another branch of the Bannigan family. Can you post some details of your family on this forum (or, alternatively, send me the details as a private message) so that I can try to find out if your Isabella was related to mine.

I have found out more information on Sarah Miller and Patrick Bannigan from records in the Mitchell Library. If this is of interest still, please let me know and I'll pass them on.

Hi,
I am looking for Felix Bannigan (Banigan) and his family in the 1841 Census of Ireland. They were living in Ballybay, Monaghan. Griffiths Valuation (1858 -1860) has Felix Banigan, Main Street, Ballybay.
Thanks.

hi - I do not know if I will be any help to you - but I have bannigan in my tree from monagan in ireland - they were all related to my gt gt granda james smith who came to fife from ireland - and when one of his daughters married found out this bannigan's mother was my james sister. but cannot find them in ireland - regards bambie
-
Hi,
I think that what you are telling me is that James Smith's sister married someone from the Bannigan line. And, if I have picked this up right, James's daughter married her cousin.
Do you have
any census information on them?
the forename of the Bannigan?
Thanks
Des

hi des - yes that is what I meant - the only thing I have in census - is James Smith and his wife Elizabeth Kirk on Fife Scotland with their children. While tracing the children - found that their daughter agnes smith married 31 dec 1889 lochgelly fife to john bannigan b 1879 ireland - his parent were rose smith and peter bannigan born monaghan Ireland - they had cousin on the marriage cert.
Now in the census had the bannigan's living as lodgers with the smith family.
in the 1851 census had william McCulloch a lodger living with them - this must have been a brother of my james smith mother who was mary McCulloch - his son.
in the 1881 census fife scotland - was bernard brangian boarder 22 born ireland (this would be a brother of peter)
and another patrick collins boarder 46 born ireland
so it looks as though james smith had 2 sisters one a rose smith - married a bannigan john b 1879 and his sibblings were james b 1861 and bernard b 1861
the other sister married donnely - as michael smith (son of James) married a mary donnely b 1869 ireland and her parents were william donnely and mary smith
on James Smith death cert his parents were john smith and Mary Mcculloch.
hope you can understand all this - quite a family puzzle - but could not find anything about them in ireland sites so far - let me know what you think - kind regards bambie
-
Des- Killeshandra, Co. Cavan is the only bit of the 1841 census that survives.
-

Hello I am Felix Bannigan's niece. I am James Bannigan's daughter (James was born in 1921). They were brought up in the Long Hill and later James and Fely lived in Dublin. There were 3 girls and three boys in the family. The last living in the family is Sister Bridget who now lives in Belfast.
I hope this helps.
-
Hello Viv,
Thanks for the info on Felix. The Felix you are referring to is probably the great-grandson of the Felix I am looking for (Died in Ballybay, County Monaghan, Ireland in 1881)
I am pretty sure that most of the Bannigans originated in this area (at least that is as far back as I have managed to trace them). Felix seems to be a name that recurs quite often as Felix was also the name of Felix's (D. 1881) father.
If you have any info on your Felix's ancestry I would be very interested to see it.
Thanks again,
Des

Thank you Dathai for linking the birth of Mary Ann Brannigan and the death of Felix, Wound to the head wonder accident or not ?? I think that after his death is when Mary Bannigan must have moved over to Glasgow.
Thank you Kiltaglasson for the link to Mary Bannigan death, it shows age 75yrs looking at other records the age is out a couple of years but I know this can happen and it means she must have moved back to Ballybay so need to explore that more, but poor woman extensive burns.
