I am trying to find ancestors connected to a Turnbull family in Northumberland in the 1800's. My direct blood line is the Cloughs, but Elizabeth Turnbull born 1781 and who died in 1856 in Seaton Sluice is my 5 x Great Grandma on my maternal side.
She married a man named Robert Brotherick, by 1841 she was registered as a Pauper and living alone. She had four children:
Elizabeth Brotherick B: 1808
Edward Brotherick B: 1820-1871
Mary Brotherick B: 1820
Robert Brotherick B: 1821
I cannot find anything at all on the Turnbull family, so any help from anyone would be greatly appreciated.

Born Feb 18th baptised March 21st 1808 ,parish of Earsdon

Marriage Familysearch Pilot;
Robert BROTHERICK
Elizabeth TURNBULL, 22 March 1806, Christ Church, Tynemouth, Northumberland
You say she died 1856, if so then she would appear on the 1851 Census which would give her exact age and place of birth.
Have you found her in 1851?
Trish :)

Elizabeth and Robert were married by licence rather than banns so hopefully there will be some further information about them in marriage bonds,

I have been unable to find the other two children with refernce to Robert and Elizabeth Brotherwick,
have you any information on them other than rough dates of birth,to confirm they were the children of this couple,
-
As you probably already know. Elizabeth is with Robert on 1841 census, living at Sandy Island.
On 1851 she is by herself at Sandy Island. (Census ref 2412-254-2) Two pages away at 2412-255-6 is Edward Broderick and family at Seaton Lodge.
As Radcliff spotted on the baptism record of son Robert, the couple were living at Seaton Lodge in 1821.
To see the Lodge on maps go to communities.northumberland.gov.uk
Enter the Seaton Sluice community section and under Ordnance Maps look at the 25 inch versions. (Also on map in " Plans" section.)
The Seaton Burn runs south to north before taking a sharp left turn to enter the sea. Seaton Lodge, estate, was immediately west of the Seaton Burn as it flowed northwards

Thank you Michael and Radcliff for all of your help, it is immensly appreciated.
The information I have got of their children is from census results that I have been following regarding their son Edward Brotherick B: 1820 and D: 1871. This is my direct relative. He married Margaret Lane B: 1820 D: 1860 in Earsdon in 1841; They had a daughter called Mary Ann Brotherick B: 1846 in Seaton Sluice M: 1868 and her death in Hartley in 1921.
She married Robert Hornsby B: 1846 Seaton Sluice and who strangely died the same year as her. Robert Hornsby was the father to Mary Robson Hornsby (My Great Great Grandmother) who married a man called James Evans.
Their daughter Catherine Ann Evans B: 1903 D: 1980 married William John Bland Clough B: 1898; their son George Evans Clough is my Grandfather.
I am researching Catherines family as her mother Mary was very abusive, but for some reason only towards Catherine- Catherine was then sent away to live with her Aunt Margaret and Uncle Jack Fenwick.
James famously left Mary, and tried to for good, owing to her abuse (some think).
The name Brotherick seems to change consistently whenever I find out new information- was this normal? A cousin of mine has found census returns where the name has changed every 10 years, which is making it very difficult to trace this family.

JRC,
Because many folks in 1800s did not read and write, officialdom recorded surnames etc from their sound rather than spelling.
My mother's surname was Gallagher, but it had almost 30 variations on the 1881 censuses.
I found Brodericks on censuses by using " brod*" as a search criterion.
And by the way, about 50% of my "oral history" ( the family info handed down to me) proved to be incorrect when viwed against actual records.

Seaton Sluice, Turnbull (and Ord) is mentioned in another post currently running on this site.
It started in Scotland, moved south and was last mentioning North Shields
Hope you find it OK

Hello, my maternal grandmother was Dorothy Colman Webster daughter of Margaret Elliott Brotherick(b1871)/William Webster. Margaret's great grandparents were Robert Brotherick/Elizabeth Turnbull who married in 1806. I don't have a birth or death date for Robert.

Hello Ken
Although I have ancestors in Morpeth and 8
Elizabeth Turnbull of appropriate age, I do not see any of them as your Elizabeth that married Robert Brotherich in 1806.
Each of them seems not to have married a Robert:-
E born 28 Aug 1778 Birdhope Craig marr ?
E born 31 Dec 1786 Rothbury Nbld marr ?
E born 24 Oct 1773 Newcastle on Tyne ?
E born 1775 married George Rait
E born 1775 married John Foster
E born 1782 married James Hilton
E born 1785 married William Coverdale
E born 1788 married John Frier
Wish I could help

I have found with the name Brotherick that it changes dramatically in spelling even over short periods of the 10 year Census, which is odd, so this might be one of the reasons why it is so hard to find Robert and Elizabeths marriage details.
Robert and Elizabeth are my Great Grandparents several generations back. I have very little information on them so I am of little help too.
