Hi, I'm hoping someone out there has links to the Cassford family and can help me with a mystery.
My great gran Mary Ann Gilbert married my great grandad Thomas Moss in Leicester. After he died she married a chap called allegedly, William Brown from either Redbridge or Newport (depending on the census) born abt 1858, who was a gas engineer. They had a child called Frank Edward.
Now the mystery is that although in 1908, Mary Ann was going by the name of Mrs Brown she actually appears to have married a chap who kept changing his name.
I eventually tracked down the marriage in 1902 but it was to a John Cassford and they married out of the parish where they lived, although sitll in Leicester.
William Brown's name changed through the electoral register from William Brown to William Brown Cassford (1920) and then to be John B Cassford again when he dies in 1930.
The son, Frank Edward, similarly changes his name on the register but his birth is registered as Frank Edward Brown Cassford in 1901.
He lives in Leicester, marries a woman called Edith Doris Bryan in 1922, and they have at least one child, a boy called John who dies as a baby.
I have no idea what was going on but the mystery is really bugging me. Can anyone shed any light on why the name change?
Thanks very much,
Christmassy

There is a Redbridge near Southampton, and Newport on the IOW. Is this the connection to Hampshire?

Sorry folks, just caught up with this. I obviously got too caught up in the tale to make myself clear.
Yes, I am hoping that any Cassford family members who still live in the Isle of Wight or near Redbridge might be linked to me in some way or at least recognise the name of a John (or William) Cassford born about 1858 in either Redbridge or Newport.
As I said, it depends which census you look at as to where he was born. I know there were a lot of Cassfords in Carisbrooke in the 19th century so I hoped there might still be a link.
Hope I'm being clearer now.
Many thanks,
Christmassy

A John Cassford was born on the Isle of Wight in 1859, mother's maiden name Greenfield. It seems to have been a common name there.

PS I really must have been asleep the other night ::)

Thanks Little Nell,
He sounds a strong candidate. Here's hoping there is a RootsChat member who is a Cassford!
Thanks again,
