Title: Death in Deal, Kent of Harriet Port 1920?
Post by: Elaine and Marie Dewell on Saturday 13 November 10 09:34 GMT (UK)
Hi everyone, I need help with my Gt Grandmother Harriet Port (7 Apr 1844 Woodnesborough) who married 5 Nov 1864 Robert Edward Collins (6 Jan 1844 Ash, Sandwich -1922 Eastry).Found couple in census' 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881, 1891, 1901 but can't find death of Harriet. My late mother recorded she remembered family visits to a 'cottage in the Sandhills in the north end of Deal, Kent. At first I thought this was type of town or suburb but when visiting Deal years ago, realized she actually meant sandhills literally. They spent their final years in this 'cottage' which she thought was home made and the area was not in census etc. Another family member thinks she had died around 1920 but obviously not looking properly or missing it.
Have another post in Kent about Sandhills cottages. Any help appreciated.

Hi Marie
The cottage should have been on the census - have you tried looking at 1911?
They should also have been in the local street directories, which are kept in the library (some are available online).
It is likely that they would have been buried in the Hamilton Road Cemetery in Deal as most of the local churchyards would have been closed.  The records of burials are held by Dover District Council at Whitfield - they will do a search for you if you e-mail them with the details.

HIya Bill, you have helped me before. You have sent a shiver up my spine just thinking she might be in Hamilton Rd as my mum died last year and I am flying over to Deal in 2012 to add her ashes to the Dewell plot there.  I will email the council today as I just emailed them about my mums ashes and have the contact from a few days ago. I looked in 1911 and found nothing, and in a number of other free bdm sites (found a couple in other parts of England) but this couple never moved out of Kent...unless maybe they might have been moved to a large hospital out of the area...unlikely though? THanks for your reply and help. Regards, Marie

How kind! I will! I am accompanying a friend to the World Thalidomide conference in London to help her with her children and then my then 6yo to Deal for a week or more and basically going to just do family history stuff in Deal, go to the library and as many churches and graves as I can  and visit the towns listed so often in my family tree...Ash, Eastry, Sandwich, Sholden, Walmer, Sandhills etc. So would love to have a catchup and coffee. I was going to see if there were any family history groups who might be on while I am there or schedule my trip for around then. Regards and thanks, Marie

The Deal branch of the Kent FHS meets on the 2nd Tuesday of every month (no meeting in August) at the Wesley Hall in Union Road at 7pm for 7.30.  Free tea and coffee.  Entrance free for KFHS members, £1 for non-members.

You will be made very welcome if you can come along and I'm sure you will find others with similar intrests who will be pleased to chat with you before and after the talk.

Unfortunately something has happened to the branch website - the service provider has taken it down for some reason and is not replying to my e-mails, so I am going to have to look for a new home for it when I get back next month.  In the meantime, our programme organiser, Jenny Noake, has put what she has got booked for 2011 here: http://jenniferacorn.wordpress.com/deal-district-2011-programme/

Best wishes
Bill
