Does anyone have information on Joseph Clay c 1795? He was born in Deighton, York. I need his wife Sarah's surname if possible, she was born c1797 in Netheroyd Hill, Huddersfield. Also his and her parents.

Hi
I've had a quick look and the only one I can find is Joseph Clay who married Sarah Bottomley on the 23 October 1794 at Huddersfield St. Peter's.
I have also got two possible baptisms.
Joseph Clay of John Clay baptised 17 September 1769 at Huddersfield St. Peter's.
Joseph Clay of William baptised 11 April 1773 at Huddersfield St. Peter's.
Regards
John

Hi
In the printed census transcript that I have for Joseph CLAY in 1851 his wife is given as Susan, not Sarah. That may be a mistake, but worth double-checking with the census image.
If Joseph's wife really is Susan, there is a likely marriage at Huddersfield St Peter's on 19th October 1815, Joseph CLAY and Susanna MITCHELL.
IGI baptisms to this couple:
John Mitchell CLAY 13.10.1816
George CLAY 17.10.1819
Joseph CLAY 28.4.1822
Jane Mitchell CLAY 1.8.1824 Then a big gap (probably others not covered by IGI) until
Matilda CLAY 29.1.1836, abode listed as Woodhouse, which fits in well with Joseph's 1851 'Fartown Green' abode as Fartown Green is at the bottom of Woodhouse Hill.
The IGI has a batism 12th March 1797 at St Peter's for Susanna Mitchell, daughter of John MITCHELL and his wife Jane.
regards,
Lesley

Thanks for your efforts. I've been away and only just got to grips with your replies.
My Joseph Clay wasn't born until around 1795 so the dates for a possible marriage or baptism can't be him
The reply from Sunlaws seems more likely but the names of the children don't mesh. I have his children as George, Ann, Amelia and William. A pity as it would have been a step forward, (or back as the case may be). I'll just have to keep serching.

Irene

Hi Irene
I think Sunlaws has found the right marriage for you.
1841 census (HO107/1275/13/37/31) has Josh (46) and Susan (44) at Fartown Green Huddersfield. Joseph is a cloth dresser. They have the following children with them:
Jane 17
Samuel 14
Ann 11
Amelia 8
William 5
Older ones probably left home or died
1851 (HO107/2295/725/11. Bradford Road Fartown Green Huddersfield. Joseph (56) cloth finisher born Deighton, Susan (54) born Netheroyd Hill. Only Jane and Samuel are still with them. Jane is married to Charles Edwards, a shoemaker born Halifax. He and Jane are both 28. Samuel (25) is a cloth finisher. Jane and Samuel are both born Netheroyd Hill.
From my Huddersfield FHS CD(1749 - 1819):
Joseph Clay baptised 27 Oct 1793 abode Deighton father Joseph
Margaret Clay baptised 17 Dec 1790 abode Deighton father Joseph
Samuel Clay born 13 March 1800 baptised 13 May 1800 abode Deighton father Joseph mother Julia Hopkin
Patience Clay born 1 Jun 1802 baptised 4 Jul 1802 abode Deighton father Joseph mother Julia Hopkinson
George Clay baptised 17 oct 1819 abode Netheroyd Hill parents Joseph/Susannah
John Mitchell Clay baptised 13 Oct 1816 abode Netheroyd Hill parents Joseph/Susannah
From Steve Whitwam's website - Huddersfield marriages:
Joseph Clay married Maria Tiffany 6 Sep 1790
Joseph Clay married Julia Hopkinson 22 Sep 1799
From NBI
Maria Clay buried 1 Mar 1798 Huddersfield St Peter
Hope this helps. I'll look for Susannah now.
Anne
Edit: Sorry, should have made clear all BMD records are Huddersfield St Peter.

Hi Anne,
First of all, very many thanks for taking so much trouble on my behalf, you are obviously far more experienced in genealogy than I am. I was just replying to your first post when the second came through.
Have I got this straight?
Joseph Clay married Susannah Mitchell on 19 October 1815
Children...
John Mitchell 1816
George 1819 (my ancestor)
Joseph 1822
Ann 1823
Jane Mitchell 1824
Amelia 1826
Samuel 1827
Matilda 1836
Susannah Mitchell baptised 1797
Her parents John Mitchell and Jane Dyson married 17 July 1786
with ten other children born from 1797 - 1813
This is incredible, so much to add to my tree, I can't begin to say how grateful I am. I'm new at this and do struggle at times.
Kind regards
Irene

You're welcome Irene, there's nothing I like better than a bit of detective work especially now I've just about run into the ground with my own tree.
Your summary looks good, but I would suggest that John and Jane Mitchell were the parents of all the children I listed. I believe I am right in saying that Netheroyd Hill is in Fartown, so those baptisms with abode recorded as Fartown are just a bit less precise than the others.
My family all come from Elland/Halifax/Huddersfield so I've had a lot of practice with the records from there! It's worth saying that not everything is on line, and even when the bare records are on the IGI you don't get abodes and occupations, essential to distinguish between different families with the same names.
Fortunately both Huddersfield FHS and Calderdale FHS have a lot of publications which really help, and if you want to follow your family lines further back I really would recommend that you look into them.
Regards, and Good Hunting

The marriage of Jane Mitchell Clay to Charles Edwards was registered in Huddersfield in the March quarter on 1851 so they had just married when they were living in Joseph Clay's household in the 1851 census; which was on 30th March, 1851.
The following are from the familysearch beta site so they will need checking :
John Mitchell Clay (father Joseph) married Elizabeth Pilling (father Joseph) at Elland on 21 Feb 1841.
In Anne's post of the 1841 census, Matilda is not in the family household which suggests she may have died. However, a marriage of a Matilda Clay (father Joseph) to William Briggs (father John) took place at Elland on 28 Feb 1855.
As an aside, Matilda was baptised in 1836 and William was 5 in the 1841 census so they may be twins.
Samuel Clay (father Joseph) married Sarah Haigh (a widow; father Richard Turner) on 27 May 1861 at St John's Church, Huddersfield.
The burial of an Amelia Clay aged 20 at Huddersfield on 27 Oct 1852.

Found a marriage of a Joseph Clay to a Sarah
Leeds Mercury June 1 1833
Dewsbury - Mr Joseph Clay mercer and draper of that place to Sarah, daughter of Mr Daniel Rhodes merchant of Earlsheaton.
This announcement was also published in the York Herald - suggesting a York link?
(This Sarah died in 1877)
-
And in June 1868 there was a marriage of James Henry Clay, son of the late Mr Henry Clay of Dewsbury to Elizabeth, daughter of late Mr Benj Bulmer of Boston Spa. This was published too in Leeds Mercury and York Herald. So did Joseph Clay have a son James Henry Clay?
-
I have the George Clay, baptised at St Peter's Church in Huddersfield on 17 Oct 1819, in my tree by marriage.
From the previous posts, the Clay family were from Fartown with the family marrying and their children baptised at St Peter's.
George's wife was from Rastrick (just up the road from Fartown) so I think Dewsbury is just too far away
-
Thanks once again to all those who have helped me. It's particularly useful to me as I don't live in England so am completely reliant on the internet for my information. I lived in Elland all my childhood and most of my family originate from the Elland, Rastrick, Halifax and Huddersfield areas.

Thanks Philip
The marriage is the last one you list to Susannah Mitchell. I didn't have the date so I'm grateful for your information.
Now I'm looking for Joseph Clay's parents.

Philip, may I please ask for a clarification.
In Reply 2, Sunlaws gave the date of the marriage between Joseph Clay and Susanna Mitchell as 19 Oct 1815.
You have given 19 May 1815 so is Sunlaws' from the IGI and yours from the Parish records?
Thank you
