Does anyone have a reliable pedigree for Sir John Browne, Lord Mayor of London in 1480?
I have a good source for his son Sir William Browne who was Lord Mayor in 1513, and his parents are given as Sir John Browne and Alice Swinsted.
All the trees on Ancestry make me a little nervous of their accuracy, as they show Sir William Browne as the son of Sir John's second wife Anne Belwood, who he married 5 years after William was born, so that's obviously wrong. And these trees all give Sir Thomas Browne (1402-1460) as Sir John's father, and Eleanor Fitzalan de Arundel as his mother. Now I would love to believe this as it would give me a line back to the Plantagenets, but I am already suspicious of the information already mentioned, and I have an old record from a pre-computerised family file that gives Sir John's father as Steven Brown, Lord Mayor 1438 and 1448, and Steven's father as Sir Anthony Brown.
So does anyone know for sure if Sir John Browne's father was Sir Thomas Browne or Steven Brown?
Hope there are some well connected forum members with the answers!!

According to this site:
http://www.thepeerage.com
Sir Thomas Browne married Eleanor Fitzalan about 1431. Their children were:
Robert b 1435
Katherine
Thomas
Sir George Browne b 1439
William Browne b 1441
Sir Anthony Browne 1443 - 1506
Jane b 1445
Eleanor was the daughter of Sir Thomas Fitzalan of Bettsworth. Can't prove or disprove the Arundel connection.
Sir Anthony married Lucy Neville, daughter of one of the Kingmaker's brothers.
There is no John Browne among Sir Thomas's children.
I would recommend that you check any information where possible. The site is generally based on reliable sources but I have noticed some information coming from e-mails which has been added and I'm not convinced that it is completely accurate. Anything from Cockayne is regarded as relatively reliable.

Thank you Little Nell; if Sir Thomas is not Sir John's father, as I kind of suspected, there is one shedload of wrong information on Ancestry, but I don't suppose that will surprise anyone.

I've found him on the peerage website; it doesn't give his father:

OK I've worked it out now, a bit of a sideways step, and Ancestry is really messed up.
Sir John Browne's father was Stephen Browne, himself a Lord Mayor. Stephen's father was another John Brown of Newcastle.
Stephen's brother was Robert Browne, who had a son who was Sir Thomas Browne, the one that married Eleanor FitzAlan.

Gah, that's not looking good either; Ancestry people have Robert Browne's father as Sir Anthony, and by my calculations I was expecting John.
I think I'll have to let the dust settle on this one and come back to it when my brain has recovered. If anyone has any thoughts in the meantime, please post!

Hi,
I was wondering if you have been able to settle the question of Sir John Brown's parents. I seem to have them in my tree now too, and as you say there are a LOT of errors on ancestry and I am getting confused with all the different Brown's.
