Title: GJ HOSKEN MIDDX HUSSARS 1/1 22/10/1918
Post by: RanR on Friday 12 November 10 10:48 GMT (UK)
Trying to find out about 3 of my great uncles - Henry Richard Hosken 2nd Lt MGC Infantry 54th Co died 11/8/1917 message already posted. William Hosken rifleman London Regt (Queen's Westminster Rifles) 2nd/16th bn died 18/3/1917.

George James Hosken died 22/10/1918 regimental no. 260090.  He was a corporal of the Middlesex Hussars (1st of the 1st) and is commemorated in the Alexandria (Hadra) war memorial cemetery.

Can anyone please help me with entries in regimental diaries, finding out where he was fighting at the time of his death etc and other details of his war service like when and where he enlisted etc?

As mentioned in Henry Hosken's message, I have no experience in researching military matters.  This information was found on the CWGC website.  (My Wiltshire OPC website has transcriptions for North Wiltshire parishes which might help you to find any wiltshire Great War ancestors' baptisms etc www.ruth opc.synergytrust.org.uk)

Very appreciative of any help please with website links, pointers for where to research next and look-ups etc.

Thank you very much,
Ruth

Thank you for these replies.

The photos projec website is wonderful.  I hadn't come across that before.  I'm sure my mother-in-law will be interested in that as she lost an uncle or two on the Royal Oak (ship) and it says where the memorial is for that - very useful.

I managed to find all three of my Great Uncles (HR, GJ & W Hosken) so thank you very much indeed.

Thank you also fro the heads-up about the free Ancestry acess for this week.  I've just managed to find all 3 on that as well.  Very interesting but I'm on a steep learning curve to make head or tail of the information wirtten on the medal cards.

George James is the most intersting of the 3 as far as his medal card is concerned.   He appears to have joined up in April 1915 and went out to Egypt for which he was granted the 1915 star medal.  I had thought that was only given to people fighting on the Western Front so that's a new bit of information for me.

He seems to have been 1 or I.C. of L whatever that was (his Corps) and was a Private at that point.  Then he has in different pen either Yeo or Yes wirtten above that and in the same pen below it says C of Hrs (which I'm assuming means Corpl of Hussars).  It also has some asterisks for that place saying elsewhere that he was a Cpl. and he has a different regimental number at that stage from the one wirtten down for the first corps when he was a Private in Egypt.

Any ideas?!

OK.  Thank you both so much.  I'm very grateful for your time and assistance.

Corps of Hussars and Corps of Lancers were the main branches of cavalry, groupings used mainly used for records purposes.
Yeo is short for Yeomanry, the cavalry element of the Territorial Force  after 1908 -
part-time soldiers until their units were 'embodied' or mobilised for war in 1914.

Wow.  Thank you.  I hadn't thought of the Lancers.  I had considered Yeomanry but wasn't really sure what the difference in their duties were (Yeomanry, Lancers & Hussars).  Was there any difference?

Thanks very much indeed.
