I have commenced a new topic on behalf of a friend who is a beginner to family research. An male ancestor was named .......MERIONEY (she thinks this is correct spelling) who married a Grace Mary BAKER, and they lived in Croydon,Victoria. Husband died in 1980-90's when they were living in Sorrento, Vic. In 2000, Mary was in Kingston, Hobart, Tasmania. Any information of this couple would be appreciated. Ruth

It appears the couple were married in Croydon England in the third quarter of 1930
He was born in 1908 at Gravesend Kent
Also a possibility she was born in Kent in 1907
The couple left South Hampton in 1959 for Melbourne

Thanks to all posters. I had thought the spelling my friend gave could have been incorrect. I would appreciate any further details, such as children etc.? Much appreciated. Ruth

If they had children they would have been born in England, I would assume.
Probably the best way to see if there was any family would be from a death or funeral notice. One of our very kind rootchatters goes to the NLA in Canberra, perhaps she might be able to do a lookup for you
How was your friend related to the couple?

Thanks very much for all your help. However, apparently Grace Mary Baker was a school friend of my friend's mother.
Thanks to everyone but no further information is needed. Ruth

Hi Ruth
Just had a quick look for a death notice for Herbert MERRONY but nothing in Melbourne Sun from 8-10 April. As you said you didn't need any more I didn't look for Grace but I can, at another time, if you would like.
There are only 3 entries in the current telephone directory with that surname

Greetings
I'm Grace Mary Baker/Merrony's eldest son Michael, born 27/9/1932 in Croydon, Surrey, UK.
Have sister Anne (dob 7/11/38) and brother John (dob 8/3/34). Anne lives in British Columbia & John near Melbourne, Australia. I left UK in 1951 for Zimbabwe & Family came to Australia 1957/60. I now live in southern NSW, Australia.
I've traced the Baker ancestors back to late 1700's in Wiltshire. My maternal grandmother was a Freeth. Their history goes back to late 1700's in Birmingham, UK. They moved to London around 1815 and worked as silversmiths and related trades.
Hoping there's a connection.
Best wishes Michael :)

Hi Ruth
My name is Michael Merrony, eldest child of Herbet Mark Merrony (1908-1974) & Grace Mary Baker/Merrony (1907-2001).
Just read your message again.
My father died 7/4/1974 in Rosebud Hospital on the Mornington Peninsular, Victoria, Australia. Their address at the time was Sorrento, not far from Rosebud.
I'm intrigued if there is a family connection.
My maternal grandmother's name was Freeth.
Best wishes Michael
